How to Start a Satellite or Cable TV Channel?

Does anyone know what is needed (other than money) to start a small cable or satellite tv channel? Hardware? Uplink?

I am considering pitching the major satellite/cable providers the idea of a non-profit tv channel. Kind of a 24/7 PSA whose programming would consist of documentaries, educational programming, and original content (news, reviews, etc.).

Would the cable/satellite provider (DirectTV, Dish, Charter) be losing a lot of money by donating the channel space? Or is it like an internet service provider donating an IP address? Plenty to hand out, with minimum expense to them.

I did a web search and didn't find anything like it so it's either impossible or innovative. lol

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

hey pk...

i could be mistaken but i believe the tv providers are required by law to allot a certain amount of free or public access television. now, i know you are considering a non-profit station/channel with its own 24/7 'round the clock branding...but I'm betting its quite doable...especially if you are non-profit...

Look at PBS or especially TBS. They are HUUUUGE and all over the world.....

In this day and age, it's much easier to be a content provider than a "broadcaster" (be it over-the-air, cable, satellite, or internet).

That said.
Harware wise, you'd need a playout server (basically a computer that plays out clips from a playlist) with automation/scheduling. And then you'd need transmission equipment to get the signal to whatever delivery platform(s) you wish to use.
Technically it's not very hard. (Assuming you arn't doing any live production or switching of incoming feeds.)

But again, I'd strongly recomend providing content to established broadcasters. Or then there's the internet route; become a youtube sensation.
