Manual controls for 5D II video, hack initiative

Who gets the money if the hack is never delivered?

I suppose you could throw a lotto using all the names that donated.

Good idea! I've had this question a few times and I never worked up a great answer. I think what I am leaning towards right now is that I will put up a poll where everyone can vote what to do with the money. And your idea will most likely be one of the alternatives for the poll.

I donated $3 :]

Excellent !

Personally I think that is the perfect amount. an amount you can live without if no hack should come trough, but still enough to keep the ball rolling. The idea here is to get the masses to donate a little bit each.

after all if 1000 people donate (a fraction of all 5D II owners) there would be thousands of dollars.

Yeah, 3.

Yeah, 3.

Sadly not quite because greedy ol' paypal takes a share and they have a start value so how much they take in % depends on each contribution which is why I can't say for sure how much it would be.

Someone for instance donated 0.01 dollars which is awfully kind, however paypal stole the entire cent :-P

Hmm, all this could becom contraproductive. If I had the hack I would wait with the release until there are some more $$$$ (actually about 23$) :D

Well I suppose but then again the person might not have made it at all if we weren't around. I mean if he is that greedy he is more likely to sell it at $100 which someone actually tried for another Canon camera... Canon stopped him pretty quickly so he just gave it out for free.

Also most hackers are doing it for the glory. The money is just a bonus and also an indicator on how badly people want this. If people are willing to donate on the idea that there could be a hack that means people want it badly.

Also don't forget there is already $300 pledged in the comments. Of course I can't guarantee that the pledgees will commit once we are at the finish line

I was just joking, you are absolutely right.

I poked around CHDK, which is the current project that provides firmware hacks for many Canon P&S cameras. There are a number of apparent problems with hacking the 5d mkII firmware, but so far none of them are purely "technical".

The biggest hurdle is that the more recent Canon cameras run a different operating system than the cameras Canon has been making for years. They have essentially started putting their DryOS (which is developed by Canon ) on the recent P&S and SLR's. DryOS is sort of a hand-me-down from their pro video division. Because of this, I believe there are no working ports for any DIGIC IV cameras currently. There are some working DIGIC III / DryOS cameras.

So I think at the moment it is technically possible, but will require a great deal of work. There is also an issue of availability and risk. A lot of folks will be willing to risk bricking their $250 cam, but not so many that want to brick a $2500 camera. And this type of thing does carry a serious risk of bricking.

I will probably report back once I get my camera and try to dump the firmware :)

Very interesting info, let us know what you find out when you get your camera!

The bricking is of course an issue... depending on how honest you are... in Sweden where I live I know lots of people who have successfully used their warrenty on items for one reason or another bricked by themselves.
Everyone is too trusting here... but then again...morals ;-)

But yeah I imagine we want a very good low level coder who has a lot of time on his hands and is willing to risk his camera for the glory :-)

Nice!

Nice!

I think this is a great idea! If you think about it, the 5DMkII is actually more advanced than the RED One in several ways. Firstly, low light from this appears to be much cleaner than the RED. The chip has a much higher pixel skew (22mp compared to 12mp on the red). And this camera appears to have enough processing power to scale down the image in real time to 1080p from a larger chip. Not just that, but the compression (whereas less desirable) requires more processing power than the RED raw codec.

I honestly think the best place for this hired Hacker to start would be reviewing a Red build, and trying to adapt it to this camera. Hell... other than throughput to the CF card, someone might be able to get this to be a 6k camera with the right hack.

Get to it, I just ordered one.

The common consensus is that it skips every third line - ie: it doesn't do realtime downscaling.

This is evident from some of the aliasing issues seen in test footage.

What is 'pixel skew' ?

We are trying, hacker wanted!

Lots of money

Lots of money

Just wanted to say that we are coming up to around 2000USD which is very impressive!
