KxS is dead, long live KxS

I am very new to all this so can someone please answer these questions? So basically, when you film using these, there is no loss of image quality or resolution and no artifacts, it looks exactly the same as when you record with the expensive cards from sony? But, you can't overcrank with these cards? at all? Thanks. Overcranking is VERY important to me but I suppose these cards could be used for everything else.

What would you say the percentage of slomo footage is to your regular capture footage.
As with most, I'm sure the ratio to normal captured footage is less for slomo.

Use your SxS card for slomo.

Yes, data is data... there's visual no difference.
You can overcrank 40 to 45FPS @ 24P without an issue.

BTW...
I have a feeling these Delkin cards are hit and miss for working.

Out of the two I bought. One had an unknown media when I first used it.
It started working, but then stopped again. It may be the internal contacts.
I played around with it, but it's not working.

I heard another similar report.

If you find a source, you may want to order more than needed to replace the ones that don't work.

Delkin should put some resources inot making some foolproof ones pretty much specifially designed for us. They could sell them at 100 bucks a pop and we would all win. They get profits but we get reliability for a fraction of the cost of an SxS card.

Kensingtons were/are never perfect out of the box either, I just recieved 15 from OS and 2 were DOA. There have been many reports of faulty Kensington card, I recieve emails every other day with people having some problem with their newly aquired Kensington's such as I had with some of mine (eg request a good SD card be formatted and then lock up at 79% etc)

I have had one 'restore media' with a KxS combo in SP mode during a concert (contineous recording).

Don't let anyone pretend there is any one reader/writer out there that works perfectly with everyone. They all have the same potential for problems as each other, hence why you always need to test your reader/writers and media well before you trust them for production work.

If an occasional Delkins shows an occasional problem with the contacts due to the push/eject insertion nature, the fact is so will all other models which try to copy what the Delkin card does. So far my Delkin has not has a single problem.

These things are all retail US$40 or less so you simply can't expect SxS reliability on every one out of the box but once you test and find a few good units, you will be able to use them very effectively...

Yesterday I received one "old" Delkin and two of the Chinese generics.

The generics have worked without any issues (other than the obvious fact the EX1 door won't close).

The Delkin, however, has the dreaded push/eject insertion problem in that it constantly attempts to eject the SDHC card. It also has the "restore media" problem. So my first attempt at using a Delkin hasn't gone so well. I will try more Delkins, when I can find some, because the card itself is a nice physical fit for the EX1.

To insert the Delkin card push on the top of the bottom of the card, this will prevent you ejecting the SD card at the same time. Alternatively put the reader in first, then insert the SD card.

The problem with one of my Delkins is it "almost" works.
It get restore media errors.
I'd rather have a card that was just a hard failure.

Hopefully, I can find at least one or two more that work.

Have you guys seen this?

I received the final production version of the Expresscard adapter I was referring to in my post of 28/11/08.

This isn't a prototype, this is from the first batch off the production line, ( although we didn't have the final artwork ready for this small batch, so please excuse the temp label for now ).

If you watch the video below you can see the card in action.

The first design consideration was to ensure that with an SDHC inserted, the EX1 door would close. - Done.

The second was It is designed to ensure that the SDHC will not eject from the Expresscard while it is in the camera, unless by deliberate and concerted effort by the user, not by accident. You can see where it slightly moves but does not eject or disengage from the Expresscard or camera, even after sticking my big thumbs in there to try to. - Done.

The third was performance - that it should meet at least the performance of what other cards were already doing. The card will crank up to 48fps, which as we understand from many on this thread is the limitation of the USB implementation on this camera. - Done.

The fourth was that it would be reliable, that it should work each time and every time. So far it has been recognised every time by several EX1 cameras and hasn't dropped one frame. - Done.

The last consideration, not a design one but just as important, that it didn't cost any more than other cards already on the market. - Done.

The price? $US35 + postage which will be approx $10 to the US, and $12 for Europe.

We will be offering quantity discounts on freight as most people appear to be ordering more than 1 at a time, with orders of 10 or more being freight free.

We'll be putting up the website to take orders on Friday this week, and we expect to start shipping 19/12/08 ( 12/19/08 for our US friends ). There shouldn't be any shortage of cards as we have already committed to our first production run of 20,000 cards to be delivered over the next two months.

Oh and one last thing the name? MxR Expresscard Adapter. I wanted to use "Efilms Expresscard Adapter", because "Efilms" has been my trading name since 2001, but I thought it would confuse people.

If you have any questions I'd be pleased to answer them, just remember we're in Sydney, so if you don't get an immediate response it's because we are catching some shuteye, too much excitement for one day.

Let's put a "Done" after this one too! I'm sold.
lol..Steve

Thats great. I wouldn't hold your breath on the 'reliable' though. So far my Delkin hasn't missed a beat either and OCs to 45fps but with wider spread testing others have had a few little issues here and there. It doesn't matter too much with the low cost of the readers, you just replace them to get a reliable one.

PM me if you want me to integrate info into the XxS page when you have it.

PS: The "here's what we have been waiting for' WRT the door closure, not really accurate, we have had that for a few weeks now with the eFilm's.

PPS: Delkin did say to me a few weeks ago that 'eFilm' is a trademark they have had for many years now.

I only have two Delkin's, so it's hard to go by just me. I'm at a 50% success rate with only one card working. Someone else just reported he bought twelve and had four that did not work.
That's not good news. The Kensington is the most reliable so far.

Hopefully Neild's card works good.
I'm ordering six when available.

I think it is all about the push/eject mounting mechanism. They seem to be more likely to have a less reliable contact. If it works, it works fine, it it doesn't, it can cause problems.

I'd rather (all in all), the same mount as the Kensintons but it goes in enough to shut the EX1 door but open on one side of the card to pull the media out (or some other easy way).

With my defective Delkin, I tried using contact cleaner. It still gets intermitent restore media errors.

It's possible Neild's adapter may work great. I like how the media sits in the expresscard.
We'll have to wait and see.

Just went and tested my Delkins in the Sony USB SxS Card reader.. They dont work.. at first we thought it was a faulty card reader but then we put a Sony card in there and it worked fine.

We also tested the Delkin in an EX30 deck... that worked fine.. so i guess the EX30 has the same type of card slot as the camera.

This is really annoying because when using a USB2 SD Card reader im only getting 0.9x transfer speed max.. averaging at 0.8.

I was planning on buying the Sony Card reader to put into my Camera Case as part of the kit.. but now i dont know.

I dont own a macbook pro.. only a macbook.. so i havent got an expresscard slot..

Going to test the Delkin in my friends macbook pro tonight to a FW800 drive and see what thats like.

Joe.
These cards, Kensington, Delkin and all the others we fould that work are NOT designed to work with the Sony SxS reader. That reader is for PCIe based expresscards cards such as SxS. Our cards are USB based expresscards. Even thought the Sony is piping it's data out to USB to your computer, the internal data read/write is PCI express based.

You can buy a USB based expresscard reader for cheap, but why when SDHC readers are a dime a dozen..

Also, these cards can ONLY read as fast as the SDHC card used.
The SanDisk Ultra II reads at 15MB/s.
