SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

i'm not complaining about them anymore. at the least, they seem to be trying to make everyone happy. when the scarlets come out, if i can afford one, i might get one. but if something comes sooner, for cheaper, by canon or nikon, i'll be there and committed. especially canon. i have too many professional photog friends with many, many canon accessories that i could borrow. they have a little nikon stuff. and no red stuff. accessories (as evident in the modular system) are the key. i'm hoping for canon.

So many specs and options. We will soon start seeing detailed listings of Red setups in forum post signatures. Just like the computer guys list the colorful configuration details of their computer setup down to the memory heatsink model. Or their car tuning details.

sorry if this is a dumb question, but can someone explain the frame burst... I don't see any documentation on how long this burst shoots for?

Based on the renders (heh) this looks like a pretty sweet lineup. If they can deliver, I definitely see myself picking up a Scarlet for music video work.

I'm curious about the mini primes... Do you think RED will manufacture those, or have a third party build them?

Vapourware. It's all smoke and mirrors.

I would say I'll hold my breath until I see a physical unit but knowing reds track record I could be waiting a very long time.

Just because something is announced well in advance does not make it vaporware.
If 2009 comes and goes and we don't see a Scarlet released at all - then it can be referred to as vaporware.

It doesn't seem like that long ago when my mini dv camera was hi tech! Now you've got a 2/3 chip Scarlet for $2500? Holy moley. And modular to boot. These are great times for filmmaking.

Red should just make the Scarlet fixed lens version first and only, then build the line from there. You can't make everybody happy at once when your company its still in its infancy. It takes a lot of resources and time to try to do what Red is projecting to do. I want my Scarlet but it might be a very very long time before I get the chance to see one for real.

The Fixed Lens first wouldn't even be a smart move. The money is in the S35 and FF35 versions. Which is why the S35 brain is still the one that's slated to release sooner than the rest.

This recent announcement is pointless and carries no steam. It only serves to show that the Cameras really won't see the light of day until 2010 and that there'll just be more problems with them when they are released.

Way past time to get back to reality where viable image acquisition methods are already good enough to do the do. That includes an existing RED camera.

Red releases a fixed lens with those specs tomorrow and they will sell a ton of them, make no mistake. The problem is that it will actually be like sometime in 2010 for sure.

BTW: I don't say is vaporware it is rather: forget about having one for a very very long time.

You're only thinking out of your own pocket. If they released the non-fixed lens S35 brain tomorrow they would sell a ton of them. The difference is that they stand to bring in the spenders, at that price point, that are going to pick up more accessories and such from the RED store to outfit their S35 brain.

The Fixed Lens Scarlet worshipper plans to spend what's listed if not less: 3,750.00 (or whatever it costs). Mostly because they're the same people that couldn't get a 35mm Adapter and still shoot with a naked DVX or HVX. The rest of us, looking at the S35 and FF35 brains, are already planning to drop 12k or more to get a working camera. That goes for extra mounts, batteries, eyepieces, etc etc.

We're the ones that break banks for gear to accommodate the camera. Naturally, you'd want to go where the money is.

I wouldn't expect a fixed lens Scarlet, given the nature of manufacturing and assembling acceptable auto lens system, until mid 2010. S35? If anyone gets lucky... Christmas.

I don't think RED will ever sell a ton of anything. The $3,750 which is the cheapest "advertised" working configuration is still a prosumer price, which is a very small market, and 3k is not a popular format. I have yet to hear a client ask to shoot a commercial in 3k...LOL it's either 35mm or 1080.

I couldnt agreed more with Kholi. Red is a PRO Digital CINEMA company. I hope they know that by unleashing red 2/3" to the prosumer market, the amount of support that they need will increase very sharply. They also introduced few different codecs at ridiculous useless resolution (ok your project 9k image ) while the workflow for the RED ONE is not even stabilized yet. Not to mention how that super high resolution is going to wreck havoc on your NLE and your computing hardware.

These 14 -16 year old that is so excited about the cheap Scarlet, I hope they do not get their dream crushed when they venture into the pro realm, where a top handle mount costs $450, a EVF mount is $1200, a complete set of IR filter for the sensor is $1700 (yes, there is not build in ND for the red one), $1500 for 2 batteries and a charger ....etc. You guys see the mess here or the chaos thats going to emerge ?

Not to mention, 2/3" ? what is so revolutionary about that ? If RED is going to swing it, might as well bump the price to $6000 and offer a s35mm fixed lens scarlet. Canon already has a $2650 35mm camera, all they have to do is make the housing bigger and make it into a fully functional camcorder. Just like Arri, Panavision and other high end cnema companies out there; they are all very specialized and concentrated on their specific core competencies. You will not see Arri selling a prosumer camera or JL Fisher competing with indie dolly.

I would suspect a lot of the proposed system will not make it beyond the rendering and maybe some early prototypes. For example, what kind of battery system is that they are using ? Some proprietary system ?? Is Anton Bauer and V mount standard not enough ??
