SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

I wouldn't sweat it, I have seen some kick ass footage from a A1, it is the sweetest of the HDV camcorders as far as I am concerned. I like it much better than the XL-H1. I have shot with the XL-H1 and hated it.

Hey! The XL-H1 footie looks absolutely gorgeous if you set up the camera to mimic the "DVX Look." He he. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Not to worry. I am very pleased with the A1's abilities. It is the same CCD's and basically the same lens that comes with an XL-H1 so you get the same performance when shooting HDV for a lot less cost. Plus, Crank 2 was shot with A1's so I'm excited to see how it looks on the big screen. If it was good enough for that, then someone in my position with miniscule budgets should be fine with an A1 for awhile.

Lately I've been fixating on the new Scarlets too much when I should be writing and prepping a new project. Best thing to do is shoot with what you got now and save some cash for the future. Who knows what else will be announced or released by NAB next spring, which is a whole five months away. Not enough is known at this point for me to lock down exactly what I will purchase a year or more from now. I'm tired of trying to figure it out when I can use my time more wisely by producing stuff now and in the immediate future.

I was surprised how close it looks to a DVX's color and gamma. Nearly exact. Also, don't forget about all the other custom presets, or you can always shoot a neutral preset and color grade in post. Either way can look great.

Why these Canons? 5Dm2 is the Canon way to go now.

Well, I was merely using the fact that I already own an A1 as an example of using what you have now and to not get too fixated on the Scarlets until closer to their as yet unknown release dates. If I had a DVX or an HVX instead I would have mentioned that. Not to say that we should settle for good enough, I'm just saying that I want to shoot something and right now there is nothing I feel compelled to rush out and get to replace what I already have.

I considered the 5D mkII, but right now do not have the funds for it. I might pick up the Nikon D90 soon though. As for it completely replacing a dedicated HD video camera I think the 5D mkII or D90 would be better used as a complimentary camera to an A1, HPX, etc... At least, that is what I plan to use the D90 for in most situations.

I guess they will at least include a 25p option for the European market, close enough for 24p...

If limiting the cinematic capability of the camera is a design decision, 25p will never happen. I hope it's not. Also, there are many 30p video capable still cameras that did not get a 25p version.

"Obsolescence Obsolete"... really.

So... I own a RED ONE. What are my options?

1. Keep your RED ONE and shoot great images. Get continual free firmware upgrades.

2. Keep your RED ONE and upgrade your sensor to Mysterium-X for $4,500.

3. Trade your RED ONE in, and receive $17,500 credit, towards the purchase of an EPIC-X S35 Private Reserve package, which is only available to RED ONE customers.

4. Trade your RED ONE in, and receive $17,500 credit, towards the purchase of an EPIC FF35 Pro Cinema "Brain".

5. Trade your RED ONE in, and receive $17,500 credit, towards the purchase of an EPIC 645 Pro "Brain".

6. Trade your RED ONE in, and receive $17,500 credit, towards the purchase of an EPIC 617 Pro "Brain".

7. Keep your RED ONE and purchase a Scarlet System (one time only) with a 12% discount.

"Use one time only". Any selection of #3-#7 causes your RED ONE to be marked "Executed" and will no longer qualify for an additional consideration, including discounts, trade-ins or special packages.

Everything changes and improves in this industry. "Obsolescence Obsolete" means giving our customers a path (or paths) to upgrade to new technology so they don't have to buy a new camera every time a new sensor, feature or capability is introduced. We remain ever committed to this concept.

So what are the major differences between the new Scarlet's and the old verision? Is it the inclusion of the 72fps burst frame rate and the ability to shoot at 72fps 2K?

Unless prices and specs change, it looks like it'll be a "2/3 fixed lens Scarlet complete kit" for me. Nice price too. Now hopefully they will soon tell us know what the extra $750.00 includes. LCD? CF module? Battery pack? Audio Jacks? Viewfinder? Some or all of these accessories?

Looks really good though. I think the Full Frame 1080p mode was a wise option to add.

frame rate and rez options are some of the big changes. redcode 80 and 100 (as opposed to 42) on the S35 and FF35 Scarlet options respectively. FF35 is about 2250 cheaper now. Several of the EPIC cameras are also cheaper. full sensor 1080 is a nice addition.

Basically, thy just sweetened the feature set, and the prices went down on some of the models beginning with the FF35 Scarlet...

An even sweeter deal (that was already sweet enough imo) for current red one owners being offered the EPIC X trade in program.

They also pulled the Red One from the equation. Meaning that the Red One is going to get discontinued. So if you are a current Red One Owner, you can either get a mysterium x sensor for $4500 or pay $6k more and get an Epic with all those extra modules. Sounds like a no brainer to me.
