HVX200A and HPX170 "noise" testing results

Thanks Jan for the quick reply!

i'm wondering, on a calibrated LCD monitor, shouldn't the 200A noise seen on the CRT be enhanced on the LCD monitor, instead of increasing noise of the 170 instead? LCD monitors are picking up something that was hidden on a CRT?

just received my HPX-171 and did some tests. The noise level blew me away. I was shooting 1080i 25P with no gain. I "reset" the scene files, like some of the solutions that are posted on the site. The coring was set to +2. The properly exposed areas looks nice, but the dark and underexposed part of the images like the shadows look like it has 18DB on, im dead serious.

I haven't had the chance to compare it side by side to the HVX200 which I used to use, but just instinctively, the noise level really jump up at me. When I talk about the noise, it was viewed on a QT file, my macbook pro connected to a 32 inch Samsung LCD screen.

maybe ill post a clip and you will know what i mean.

The sky is the only thing properly exposed in the beginning. But the grains really come out as the sun sets over time. Is this actually normal?

I know its hard to tell over a compressed footage in Vimeo. But it does look really grainy on my LCD monitor.

I'm ready to be "sold" on why an LCD monitor will show more noise.

Yes, I understand if you were to plug into an analog component input and have the analog to digital conversion display your video. I could understand why this method "could" have noise issues.

But, we are taking our videos in digital form and using a digital path (DVI) right to the LCD display.
I certainly do not see noise issues viewing computer graphic data and images.

If anything, and I believe this has been brought up before, LCD displays will show the slightest faults in whatever you feed it, albeit video or any other graphicss. They are not forgiving. Also a lot of times, it's possible that the gamma settings are not correct and allow noise that would normally be buried in the blacks appear more visible. This also may be due to less than adequate contrast levels that some cheaper displays offer.

Well, just had my first shoot with my 171... used all "solutions" posted here and I have to say this camera is so noisy I'm starting to freak out... man, I'm usualy not worry about this sort of things, I couldn't care less for plastic clean images but this is a bit too much fellow dvx users... I mean, I'm shooting in broad day light, this is not suppose to happen on such conditions... any suggestions? possible solutions? and please... I'm not getting another camera... I've already paid enough for this one...

The only solutions are to pretend it doesn't exists and to get an expensive LCD to view your footage on. The Camera is noisey. Just a bit better than the 200, but definitely nowhere near EX1 clean.

If you want a clean, resolute camera and you don't have to worry about it making you money back I would suggest looking elsewhere.

I have to say this camera is so noisy I'm starting to freak out...
Please post some examples of this. I'd go so far as to say the 170 is one of the cleanest cameras on the market; not quite as clean as an EX1 but certainly far cleaner than any XHA1 or HD100 or HVX200 or any other competitor near its price bracket.

I posted noise samples on the first post here, is your camera delivering comparable noise performance?

Dudes....

I shot with everything from F900 - to the little panasonic SD 24p camera

Here is noise performance in order from first hand experince

1: F900 ( stupid clean)
2: HPX2000 ( Also stupid clean)
3: Varicam
These three as you would expect perform well they cost 35K +
4: HPX500 / HPX170/ EX1 Nice clean, but not perfect
5: Z1u
6: The small Panasonic SD recroding camera
7: HVX200

(never used any canon HD cams or the JVC)

The HVX200 is by far the softest, noisiest, most beautiful camera ever.... ITs in dead last in my opinion for "clenliness", but its what i like and it looks great. Though the 170 is growing in my heart very quickly as is the EX1....

Is the HPX170 cleaner than a HVX200 HELL YES. its the best parts of an HVX200, liek flexibility of formats, resolutions, size, convenience, WAVEFORM. (That alone makes it worth it.) DVCproHD, P2 workflow, with like 7dB less noise, and a half stop more sensitivity.

What more do you want?

I gave away all my footage... it was a quick one afternoon thing and I wasn't the one editing the stuff... hence, no samples sorry... man... Please give me a cinematic scene file clean to shoot with pleeeaaase ... I want to believe, I love this camera... I had a 200 on my hands two days ago and I would never trade that TANK for my 170... I hate Sony's plastic feel...I loved my DVX100 till dead tear us apart... one scene file just one...:crybaby:

lowlight compared to pd170

lowlight compared to pd170

as you know the pd170 is one of the best 1/3inch cams out there that is very clean in low light. how does the panny 170 compare lowlight wise, i would think at least the same if not better

I really don't know what to say...

I'm using the same camera you guys are... though I am monitoring on a bhlt900a... that could be why I'm not seeing noise.... its a broadcast grade monitor... barry was there first hand he can back me up....

but I've watched hvx200 footage on a Sony sxrd 60" 1080p screen and I haven't seen much grain either...

try bpress....

bpress krew* rep it ;)

Dudes, look at the title of this thread. The question is whether the 170 is as clean as the 200a, not the 200. I don't think anyone is questioning that it's cleaner than the 200.

... though I am monitoring on a bhlt900a... that could be why I'm not seeing noise.... its a broadcast grade monitor...

My testing found the HD SDI output to be noisier in the HPX170 than component out. I have BH-LT1700, BT-LH80 and TV Logic LVM-071W monitors and HD SDI is
noisier. I think component rolls off high frequency detail, but also noise, even though it's analog. HD SDI allows more detail, but also noise to get through.

I am satisfied that my 170 matches a 200A noise wise as long as coring is at +2
in the 170 and 0 in the 200A. A-B comparisons have to be done with component out on both cameras. I haven't looked at a 200 next to a 200A or 170.

I was freaking out too when I was looking at footage. I tried a few things, coring, reset, stuff like that. Then I looked at the footage on a TV, and I went from freaking out about the noise, to being impressed about the picture quality. What a difference between a Dell monitor and a TV. I'm happy again. I wish the camera was everything I wanted, at the price I paid, but I'm happy again.
