••Why do You Guys Continue to Shoot on the EX1?••

Well I mean that would rock Acoelho ;) We'll soon find out. We want Red to succeed, but they act like jerks basically lol. (just my opinion)

There a bit like the flash kid at primary school with the groovy trainers (sneakers) who is dancing badly to MC Hammer, winking at the girls going 'hey babes, check out whats in the trunk' and well you know, its just stuffed candy.

Now, deep though that metaphor is, the point is, big names are just that - smoke in mirrors... what counts are how much folk are moaning on these boards about their Reds going woozy and taking weeks to get parts / fixed / replaced. Not that - any problems are epidemic, but i think a lot of sheen has been sucked off them. There is a reason why folk are so interested in other 'understated' hd cam developments like the Ikonoscope.

We will see lots of features shooting on Red (I don't doubt it) but remember the circumstances. Take 'Wanted' - now that uber budget movie (compared to any of ours right...) had a whoooole different Red experience, and so will Scorsese (with his THREE Red Ones hmm...) over the Indy dude and his mates who all saved up for a Red.

The Indy Red... with coffee stains and most likely a Nikon F mount, has a different post production experience annnnd production experience to uber trained teams of seasoned hollywood professionals. It's like folk think sometimes oh i got one... now its all gonna be okay...

I actually invested in a Hpx500 myself (just my choice) over the Red cos i just dont think its ready. But second it or Scarlett is - i'll bag one, but its not ready until dudes aren't crying about stuff.

People in the UK DEFINATELY have silly senses of humour, its that dry wit!

I heard, he's actually just using the cams as place matts for 3 fisher price pixie cams! In fact, his plan is to wear them over his face like bionic eyes while he records for a new programme called 'When Voyeuristic Directors Attack' - it will be set in the ladies room of a Wendy's near you!

Okay enough horseplay hehe, whats the docu gonna be about? Is there a link?

It's true, he rented the camera's from Off Hollywood in New York. I heard all about it.

This will be very good news for Red in the credibility department for those DP's and Directors who are reluctant to take the Red plunge.

Mon amie, you don't think DoPs will go by a glossy mag article do ya! These guys will handle the cams before deciding (if they have a choice) they will talk to their bearded compatriots in the equipment room at 3am (whilst wiping crumb stains from their dried hairy fingers and take-out curry marks off their chins.)

Its more likely an ill informed overly excited indy producer or starting director with too many pennies who will go woop woop Empire mag says its ok ;) Wait till the unfriendly bearded man says its ok... it works for everything! Trust me!

I know one of the top DIT's in the industry (for top box office films). Paramount film studio's sent him to do some test on the red with Jim J and he advised them not to buy the camera, before you guys start PM'ing me it's because they can spend $500k on a Gennesis, they don't need a $30k camera.

You've been on this forum for years Super8 is there really a need to ask this same, mind numbing question? It's like we know the reason why each person likes their respective cam off by heart?

Did you honestly not know that most EX users use it because of higher Resolution? Longer Record times etc... and that folks who use panny's do so cos they prefer the organic look, intraframe codec, no rolling shutter.

Naturally BOTH dudes who own each cam will dispute criticisms of the other, ie EX guys will say 'BUT no... my cam can look cinematic' and vice versa!

Heres a solution... if you have enough to buy one, you have enough to go find one to try out. If you can't do that, why not watch the films entered into TwiFest- check out the EX ones and the HVX/HPX ones. It's abstract but will give you a much better impression if 'image quality' is better.

Your thread title just smacks of a guy wanting reassurance, as if your wanting these EX users to give you some man cuddle to make you feel good about a purchase. In some parts of the city you gotta pay for that kinda treatment ;)

It makes no difference asking 'hey guys can you tell me what to buy?' or 'hey why is camera x more awesome than camera y? Its lazy and it just means poor old Buck has to copy and paste his laudets and it gets ol' Perrone excited!

It's kind of a legit question he is asking. You actually are giving some good answers in this response. If you take out the smart ass attitude you actually would be helpful instead of a douche

Ronster

Yah i know Ronster, its just the way Satan made me ;) But there are plenty of really really nice guys on the forum anyway, and im not that mean! Check out my thread in the 3d section to see how humble and grovelly I can be!

Panavision Cameras, Lenses, Etc are not available for purchase, and have Never been since they bought mitchell and copied their movement. the only thing you can buy from panavision are t-shirts. even ARRI has adopted this policy recently and you can no longer purchase arri cameras either, although many of their older cameras (SR-series, BL, 435,535,) and accessories, new and used, can be purchased. and, for the record, Production companies do not go out and buy 1/2 million $ cameras, they rent them, along with much of their other gear, from well established houses on both coasts. the old days of a DP owning his own 35mm and working with it are all but gone, because there is such a high demand for using the latest cameras and lenses, both in the film realm and digital acquisition. as a working DP, who owns a 16mm, 35mm, SD and HD cameras, i rarely use them on higher budget projects, because national advertising agencies, and non-guerilla indies still prefer to rent a "big daddy" and shorten the shooting schedule, rather than sacrifice image quality.

p.s. RED will be taking over in the television realm, as it already has started, LONG before being embraced as a feature mainstay. in fact, you will start to see alot more IMAX 65mm film (arri now makes a self blimped 65mm) and 3-d, not "red-cinema"

I'm aware of that, just got in a hurry, my fault. They have no problem spending the money to lease a Gennesis or just shoot on film :) I'm very familar with how studio's obtain thier camera equiptment used for films. My sisters husband is the production president of the largest movie studio in the world and has run other studios for years.

So thats how you roll in the UK...

Now I understand everything.

BTW I have no desire to produce movies, just action adventure reality tv shows so it does me no good :)

Thanks for the tips on the european tv networks, I'll be hitting virgin up to buy my show for the overseas market.

I can't deny it! He will be mine ChipG... Oh yes! So is it your belief sorry that Red will dominate in TV or will they just opt to keep hiring things like Genesis etc? As far as i was aware camera hire (while an important part of the budget) doesnt figure so much that studios are desperate to save instead on Reds/ or other 3rd party new hd cam developments?

Its just my personal opinion and i know its probably wrong (goes against reason) but i think we're already starting to peak in terms of audience HD resolution expectation!

Red is now being accepted here in the usa for network tv series, I don't follow it too much because the shows I am producing are fast paced action adventure shows, stuff you'd see on the discovery channel like storm chasers, deadliest catch, shows that are shot hand held and move really fast.

I do think the red 617 sensor that has a freakin 28k will be used for every footaball game, sporting event and car race on all the networks in the usa. Place two camera's on top the stadium and have a full cropped digital zoom for every player. Or one on a formula one car race track with a digital cropped zoom via gps location on what ever car you want.

You've hit the nail on the head. Red and most of the high end HD Cams will be for TV, documentary films, the web and down in the dirt indi-films but not really for theatrical release films.

It'll be a great camera to own if you want to stop talking about vaporware and go out and shoot something right now.
