Another Uni assignment

We were given a basic 4 page script with simple dialogue and simple direction and told to adapt it into our own 5 min film.

This is what we came up with

Well I gotta admit I didn't watch the whole thing through. Skipped around. From what I saw, I think you definetally have an eye for shot composition and continuity. The fact that you shot with editing in mind and finished a movie is saying something. You had some pretty decent actors too! finding good actors willing to do movies with me is the hardest part for me. One shot I really liked was when the camera was strafing behind the computer monitors and the actor's face could be seen in between. Very nice shot.
I think most people wouldn't watch this all the way through due to the production quality. The camera work was very home video esque. I dunno what you were shooting with, but it didn't look cinematic. 4:3 aspect ratio, 60i frame rate, poor uncontrolled lighting, and constant infinite Depth of Field just sceams home video.
Worst of all for me was the audio. Only record dialogue onset with close micing, all the other noises (shoufle of the feet, beeping of a machine, knocking of a coffee cup) are recorded in post with close micing and synced. Its called folly. Rarely do high quality production use the sound they get from onset.
Sorry to sound harsh. Idk if you took the movie that seriously, but this site is serious so i'm going to give my serious critique.
You clearly have stories and actors, and an eye for visual story telling, now you needa work on getting your productions up to snuff in terms of technicalities so it doesn't detract from your story.

hey thanks very much man

It was actually shot in 16:9 on the Canon XL1 but youtube isn't great for representing this though. As for the audio we did record a lot of Foley sound using an external mic a couple of days during editing. Subtle things like the gas mask breathing, the footsteps etc. were all re-recorded and added in the edit. There is obvious sound fx added like the flamethrower and machine beeps but all the levels are done on purpose. Its a shame you didnt like the sound but trust me we did think about it and I do understand the concept.

I really appreciate the feedback and I'll let my team and the actors know that you liked it

thanks again
