LOL - short film / online series

LOL is an online drama series exploring the teenage world of sex, drugs and social networks.

I wrote and directed LOL, as well as doing the post production stuff.

It was shot on a Sony HDC-1500, recording on XDCAM HD professional disc. This was my first experience using that format and I was pretty happy with the results. Footage seemed to hold up under grading and looks miles better than the HDV stuff I've shot before on Z1's.

3 x 3-4 min webisodes were shot over 2 days.

I'm hoping to shoot some more webisodes early next year so would be really interested to hear what you guys think of it. Cheers.

Dude, I'm hooked.

My only concern is the intro and outro. You go to quick for the next show, and previously on LOL.

Love the flashbacks, wondering what has happened.

You got me hooked..

Cheers Robbie.

Yeah, you're probably right with the intro/outro sections. There's an overlap at the end of webisode 2 with the 'next on lol' which distracts from the hook. I guess it's one of those things that when you're editing it you can't see but give it a few days and it becomes obvious.

The core of the story was basically a girl who's under heaps of peer pressure and decides that she should sleep with her best mate's boyfriend.

I'd decided to use a Facebook-style voiceover flashback device and the name 'LOL' kind of came out of that.

'LOL' is something people write all the time online whether they're actually laughing out loud or not. It's used like punctuation - people say it just to fit in with other online users. That became kind of a metaphor for Keely's situation.

It kind of made sense in my head, anyway...

Oh, I don't think I would've gotten that but it's very creative.....

Hard to take the film seriously when you see laugh out loud.....

Where's number 4!

Robbie

This was actually pretty interesting. I wasn't keen on the fact that the girls hair looked so perfect after the fight but that's a minor nitpick.

Keep them coming!

Hey thanks for the comments Robbie and Michael.

Yes - absolutely makeup wise I wanted Keely to look a lot more battered. We had less than an hour to shoot both classroom scenes so was a bit of a nightmare.

Cool that no one has picked up on some of the issues we had whilst shooting. All the dialogue in the two classroom scenes is actually dubbed in post. Brought the cast back onto the set and recorded in the same room so got a realistic reverb and room tone.

There were a couple of bits shot on Z1's after the main shoot wrapped. That's all the exterior night stuff...

... and the daytime scene outside of the house. Nowhere near as good a lens as we used on the Sony 1500's but seemed to hold up OK.

Currently writing webisodes 4 - 10 which will hopefully be shot in February.

So a little update to this thread having just shared some stills over at RedUser...

This project was completed last year, shooting 20 episodes in total. Approx 4 mins each. Episodes at www.lolseries.com

Most of the footage was lit with minimal / available light, and I think the RED really shines in the outdoor scenes. Gave us tons more production value, way beyond the budget.

Thanks to North Yorkshire Camera Hire!

A few different DOPs worked on the grabs below - James Nolan, Adam Etherington and Andrew Litt

Grabs resized in Photoshop - a few with slight colour correction / added contrast.

Really looking forward to shooting my first feature on this camera, hopefully later this year.
