Remote follow focus for £150/$300

can we at least get pricing before Christmas? Our wives/significant others have been rolling their collective eyes at all of us during the year about our excitement over the Hofo. An actual price point would be great to give...

NONONONONO......you guys are doing this all wrong. Here's how you do it.

Me: Honey

Wife: Yes?

Me: I think we need to add a flame suite.

Wife: But you dont need flame suite, you can just contract that out as usual.

Me: But think of the money it will save, it will even generate more business.

Wife: Come on, at 250K it will take 2 years to pay off and you cant all do it all by yourself and turn a profit. You need to hire a full time op and there goes your overhead. How much will it cost to just insure it?

Me: Well, how about another edit suite.

Wife: It's the same thing, the supply and demand does not require another edit bay. We'll look in to that next year.

Me: You're right 250K is too much. Can I get a hocus focus then?

:):):)

so closer to $600 then? Right now I'm having to distract my wife from dropping hints about the Cinevate Follow Focus by talking about how cool the HoFo is. Thankfully she understands the need to pull focus accurately, but she's DETERMINED to have something under the tree at christmas.

Help me Obi Wan Hoarp001-enobi, you;re my only hope!

tried that route (but with a maxed out Mac) and it worked all too well.

I think $600 would be really good (only twice the teaser price). But I'd pay $800 if it were bundled with a red silk kimono or a Tiffany lamp ;-)

Just to make this clear, I never said $600, that was puckthemad's assumption.

And my most fervent hope or holiday wish. Realistically speaking though, having a price point well below $1000 (US) is an achievment all in itself. I mean come on: it's a REMOTE follow focus!

Quick progress update:

The coding is finished, finaly. Months in the making. I will have the extra functions (low battery, frequency change, direction switch) working on Tuesday and I will make a video showing this and how it works.

I am also taking the Hocus Focus out for a test run on Monday. We are making a 3min short in a night club, some steadicam. The Hocus Focus will be in the hands of my freind Paul, who is a pro loader and AC. Infact he is working at the famous pinewood at the moment, doing something for jaguar (think its an advert?)

Il take some photos and some behind the scenes photos...

Can you also ask your Paul about the side thickness of the knob and how he feels about it.

I attached a picture of a bartech to illustrate what I was taliking about earlier. This was something that was brought up again by another AC freind of mine who saw your schematics.

He said he almost always uses the unit sideways and has prebuilt witness marks per lens to see where he is. On occasion he said he uses both surfaces when he can mark points and have to guess as well.

Ignore the lcd screen but I wanted to point out another option ARRI uses. They incorporate an angled knob, which is the best of both worlds. Just something to think about.

The thing is with this, the current knob will cost more than I had originally wanted, and getting stuff like that CNC cut will cost a FORTUNE. a good percentage of the total price will be on the knob alone.

Maybe for the HoFoPro, but the knob at the moment is more than enough to pull focus with, its just the same style as the arri manual follow focus's and ive never had a problem with them...

I actually I understand your concern about the price point. I was a partner in a company where we produced underwater electrical connectors for films and even though we had our own engineers and cnc machines it was fairly labor intensive to draw up new products.

Either case I think you will beat redrock RFF (2-3 years R&D?) to the finish line by concept to delivery in just under 10 months.

I think your process has been very transparent. Even though I own a couple remote FF devices, I am looking forward to seeing the HF.

Well from what I've heard, the Redrock remote follow focus is being redesigned with some cool new features that would make it a better cross between the HoFo and the more professional end Preston and Cmotion products. It's definitely worth the wait I think. But the HoFo looks great too. I guess I just have to see it in action! I'll beta test if you want!

I know we are speculating here but I doubt anybody can come up with a product that can come close to matching a cmotion or preston systems and still preserve a price point anybody can afford without financing.

I think peter is on the right track in trying to produce an affordable yet functional unit that the average dvxuser or similar can easily afford and beat ALL the competitors to finish line.

There can be only a few reasons a product does not meet production deadlines:

-The designer/producer does not have the expertise/manpower to make these units.
-The financing is not available for R&D
-The company thinks it is not a high priority (profit/expense ratio) and shelves it.

Why the other companies have not delivered? I dont know and I dont care. Neither will the 100 people lined up to purchase the HoFo. When the units are out there and they are selling word of mouth, thats all you need to move on to the next step.

I am sure Peter will have a HoFo2 with a LCD and lens data way before the "others" have announced their announcement dates.

I may turn out be wrong about all of this but either way, we all win. Somebody will take over.

Big problem.

Woke up this morning, EVERYTHING has been stolen. From our house, whilst we slept.

They left the SGpro, took my case of lenses, camera, AND the case the hocus focus was in.

I now have NO prototype Hocus Focus, and I have a shoot tonight, no gear and they have taken both the cars.

Oh wow, my heart goes out to you Peter. That is simply terrible but at least you guys are alright; material things can be replaced. I hope they catch whoever did this.

GRrrr My lenses :'(

I had a job tonight and I had stacked up in the living room, the camera bag, a black case with the SGpro, a small black case ith my lenses and a silver case with the hocus focus.

They took my camera bag, lenses and the hofo case. For some reason left the SGpro case.

They left my steadicam, tripod, mattebox and lighting gear, but took my laptop and our TV, then both of the cars.
