The Afters - Single Shot Music Video w/ 35mm Adapter

Loved the concept, and the fact that you blocked off the whole street, and had that many people be a part of the video. Very well shot, I like how you would move the shot over to something interesting, then move it back toward the singer. Especially when the guy was doing continuous back handsprings. I like that you came back to the singer before you could see him finish, or how many back handsprings he did. Although youtube even in high quality never does beautiful HVX footage any Justice. I'd like to see a version up on vimeo.

I guess the only thing I didn't really like about it was the color, but then again you probably had good reasons for coloring it the way you did. I did like the color transition near the end, I just really wasn't feeling the greenish tint from the first part.

Just curious, did you need an AC for focusing? I have a Nikon 24mm, and the DOF is pretty deep when your that far from the subject, so I imagine focus wouldn't be that much of an issue. But what was it like with the steadycam and the 28mm lens? Did you have to pull focus at all during the shot? What F-Stop were you shooting at?

Gavin,

That was awesome! - very creative and refreshing compared to the trend of shaky cam and fast cuts. Takes a lot more effort to rehearse and block out single take like that.

I agree on the color. The color at the end even could be exaggerated as it works with the context with the song, or a gradual shift? Not sure why the change happened when it did.

Beautiful piece though. You should be proud.

Did 14 full takes and 3 false starts... this includes all blocking, planning, placing of people since we only had the road closure 7 hours and was the first time EVERYONE met together.

The steadycam was operated by someone else... I'll try to find out!

Just a "never going back to ok" colour shift in the song I guess... no real defining need for it... plus with the harsh backlighting of the sun coming up the street and our 400 dollar budget not allowing for massive screens and sun blockers... it looked better than the raw colour with all those shadows:)

We did have a focus puller! Using a remote follow focus. It was massively challenging to keep focused with little time, my driving go go go directing style, and just SO MUCH to co-ordinate for the one shot!

$400? Thats what the budget was left over after what paid you, the crew, the rental fees, and blocking the street off for 7 hours? Or it was literally $400 for the whole project?

400 was the TOTAL budget These guys have become great friends working with them over the last 3 years... the label wasn't moving on a video... so I pushed to do it in my city with my crew, with my no-budget ways!

400 was the total budget. These guys have become great friends of mine over the past few years... and despite their win on MTV video awards in the past, being part of Grey Anatomy promo, theme song to a reality show on MTV, etc... their label wasn't ready to spend money on a video for this new album so I stepped up and offered to do it with my no-budget know-how and a simple concept that could be shot in a few hours pulling all the favours that I had in my Canadian-ass!!!

Hey Gavin, I met you awhile back at the Afters show here in CA, I was there hanging out with my Friend Shannon Taylor from Vegas. Anyway, I just saw your behind the scenes video blog, it was really good to see, a lot of people should check it out, it shows that it's not easy being a filmmaker. A lot of people who aren't filmmakers don't understand the immense amount of time and energy that goes into each project, there's a lot of dedication and sacrifice. And favors are definitely a filmmakers best friend. It's amazing how much work can go into just one shot, great job pulling it all together!! Especially on only $400 bucks! Whoa! Now that's amazing!! It looks great!! Is the label going to promote it?

Gavin,

I'm quite impressed. I'm shooting my first music video in January, so seeing yours has given me a healthy dose of inspiration.

If you're ever in Toronto, I'd love to buy you a beer and pick your brain.

Cheers!

holy crap gavin! Great video! How did you manage to get a police car, bus, fully functional street shut down for 7 hrs and like 100 extras all off of favors?? LOL

great canadian work ,great canadian work ethic . hope someone sends you some american production $$ to work with. eh!

Because I rule :) haha no no because I've been peddling my filmmaking here in Windsor, Ontario for a few years and building a community of artists, backed with support from a city eager to see more filmmaking happening here! It was a lot of work but it all came together nicely! And there's over 300 people there ! haha

I made a full length film here this summer too!
