Guns N Roses Chinese Democracy Thread

Indeed he is Tom. I wonder if he has changed at all in that regard.

Hair bands huh Tom does that have anything to do with your back problems ? :)

I don't think he's changed at all. I think that's why Slash isn't in the group any more.

Nope, my back problems are because of the fact that I'm sitting in front of a computer for 10 hours a day when I SHOULD be doing something creative. Running around on stage jamming on guitar would probably help me a lot... :)

For those who haven't heard here is "This I love Track" on youtube and "streests of dreams" youtube

Amazing songs! I've heard it about 10 times already.

Streets of Dreams sounds like it could be on Use Your Illusion.

Wow, that first one doesn't sound like them at all, except for his voice.

And yes, I think Axl Rose CAN sing. I actually used to take voice lessons from the woman that he studied with. :)

Yeah, for me that is one cool thing about this new CD. Every track is so different. Which is cool with me I love to hear artists grow and change their music. Much like Radio Head, Cold Play, and Conor Oberst.

Some people will be mad about that because they can't fathom a new GNR. Some friends I have don't even like Radio Head any more because they "changed"...They are missing out.

You sing to Tom? Nice. I have a guitar but it hardly makes me a musician lol. Simply don't have time to play/learn it anymore.

I think GnR has gone through the loop and back to the beginning. Use Your Illusion was VERY commercial. It seems they really sold out on that album (to me anyway).

This one seems to be them getting back to making music for themselves, judging from the one track that you posted (I still have to listen to the 2nd one).

I do sing, but since my back is screwed up, it puts a lot of tension on my neck muscles and I tend to lose my voice if I sing. Now that I've recently figured that out, I'm trying to change that though. And I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years now. :)

That is awesome tom not your back but the guitar for 20 years :). Playing music is a very pleasant stress releasing thing to do.

I love Use Your Illusion :).

I actually think that the song "BETTER" is the best song on the album... It is what I would expect from GnR if they had stayed together and allowed their music to progress... Best song on the album in my opinion.

I agree, "Better" is the best song on the album.

Axl has one of the weirdest/coolest voices around, and still works pretty well (probably with a lot of computer help, but still impressive).

Wow, I'm really not trying to thread-jack here, but whatever your musical taste, there was nothing revolutionary about Nirvana or GnR. They became so popular largely because they were reactionary in light of what was popular and overplayed at the time. So they were bucking a small section of the mainstream, but there was nothing inherently new about any of their music. I have been a musician and songwriter for almost thirty years and a composer for almost 15. I have never been able to find any music in either of their catalogs that had not been done a million times before, for decades.

I'm not saying you shouldn't like them or that they shouldn't be a personally important band for you. But to be "groundbreaking and revolutionary" you need to do something different. Neither band did that musically. I remember when Nirvana hit it big and people were talking about how "fresh" they sounded. Half the bands I was playing clubs with in NYC sounded like that. Okay, maybe not half, but more than a few. Even stylistically what was different? Okay, I had never seen a singer wear a catcher's chest protector and a kilt, but leather pants, biker gear, torn jeans and flannel shirts? Maybe it was new to the generation at the time, but I lived through the 70's.

Their lyrics pushed the limits in terms of subject matter, but that's been a part of the DNA of Rock and Roll from day one.

It was nothing new, at least to me, except in terms of the hype and packaging.

What is? Albert Einstein said it best: "The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources."

That's true. It's all derivative in some way. (although some albums/bands meld things in new and interesting ways) But anyone who doesn't see the direct genetic link down from the Stones to Aerosmith to GnR isn't looking very hard.

Again, I'm not saying they aren't a good band, or that Appetite isn't a great album. I believe I stated I played the hell out of it when it first came out.

I'm with you on this. Loved Nirvana even though I wanted to hate them because of the hype and the obvious all too soon end coming Cobain's way. But can you say 'The Pixies'? Never could stand GnR. Can't take that voice of Axel's. And I can't believe Tommy Stinson is now in the band. Guess he likes to work with "difficult" front men.

Yeah, it's funny how many Nirvana fans I run into that have never heard of the Pixies. And Cobain was very frank about ripping them off.

I love this stuff. Hope you dont mind me jumping in.

"Front Men." Front men 'are' the band as much as anyone wishes otherwise.
That's why people like me are/were called 'sidemen'.

And yep, I loved my job back in the shadows AND I loved having an egotystical maniac out front doing his thing entertaining the crowd.

//Oh Kirvana? Curt or whatever? I didn't like him.

I see your point in some bands, especially on stage. Although I don't think Plant would have gotten far without his sideman, Page...or Daltrey without Townsend.

Kind of like Van Halen with DLR vs post-DLR. The band was never the same. Sure Hagar did a respectable job, but come on... David Lee Roth made Van Halen. :)
