Just picked up a four-month old Letus 35FE with a Canon 50mm lens for $520.

Someone tell me I did right...

i think you'll be ok. You shooting a1? i saw disjecta using it on the xlh1. looked good to me. VERY organic and pretty.

That shouldnt matter because the GG is going to trnadsmit light at a constant rate. Overexposing the CCD is what you have to worry about. I have tested 5 different 35adapter, and all ofthem behave EXACTLY the same way except the go35.

The more light you get to the gg the better. However if you felt that yo uwanted deeper DOF outdoors, closing the Iris on the 35 lens down to F16, and opening your DVX/HVX/a1 lens to open produces the same results, as leaving the 35iris open, and closing down the DVX iris, with regard to exposure and picture quality. This is the firs time in history that you can practically choose your DOF, then adjust expsure, without a massive lighting package and stacks of NDfilters.

The go35 and G35, static adapters NEED the GG to be fully and prperly exposed at Wide open on the lenses, otherwise static Grain shows up

Timur, I was trying to paraphrase the guy from Cinevate (the people that make the Brevis 35 adapter) so I could have paraphrased him incorrectly. I'm sure you would know about it better then me. But I do think if the GG is getting "too" much light (like the Brevis appears to get when outdoors) then you would want to use a ND filter on the 35mm lens so you don't "over" expose the GG... but I suppose you could prevent this in other ways, I haven't tested a bunch of 35mm adapters. Thanks for the info.

EDIT: You can find what I paraphrased HERE

DVX100A, here. I've seen some real nice-looking footage shot with that combination, too.

Maybe, for the purpose of satisfying the desire for 'high-end-looking' rigs, someone could market cool-looking vacuform shells in black plastic, that enclose your DVX+Letus/whatever, and have holes in them to let you access the controls...

A friend of mine owns a company with the largest vacuum-form machine in town...I should see if we can get hold of a Genesis for a day, and just pull some molds off it.

Letus 35FE Sky Test

Letus 35FE Sky Test

Barry, God answered my prayers and it was cloudy today.

I do see what you are saying about filming into clouds. It's like a hazy filth that apears to be laying on top of the footage.

Here's a quick clip... I used the same framing of the telephone pole that was in my eariler post.

As you can see panning is where it's spotted so frame grams don't tell the whole story.

I included a shot of a yellow brick building... that didn't have the same problem so it's just the whites I'm guessing.

Later this weekend I'll do some shutter tests to see if their's a way to minamize this condition.

Any suggestions from better camera /Letus opperators wold be welcome.

really cant see what your worried about thx?

Maybe the vid is too small but i dont notice what you're talking about.

If you were here in LA, that's just the hazy filth that overlays everything.

You get used to it.

Well, that's it, but that's very mild compared to what I'm seeing. Depends on shutter and iris settings too; the worst I got it was using the Letus lens at f16.

In the above Sky test

Nikon 28mm f2.8

DVX at 5.6
Nikon at 4

ND1 on the DVX

Also, I'm not so much worried about it as I want any suggestions in minamizing it.
My test video is small but there is something there and it bothers me enough to post and ask if theres a way to manage it. For the most part it's not a problem but when it shows up it's noticeable.

This might be a stupid question, but does it only happen when you tilt the camera up? Maybe the GG is off balance when it is titled up and it starts to show more "hazy filth", possibly because it can't vibrate or rotate properly?

Hi Guys

Looking at all the setups using the letus35FE, is it just me, or do all the setups look cheap and nasty, has anyone gota pic of a pro setup. cause Im saving up to buy one but if it looks shonkey, forget it, I'II look for an alternative, btw is there a alternative at the same price which at least looks pro?

If that's your concern, why not look at something like a Brevis?

I don't think the Letus looks cheap. If anything it makes the camera look more pro... Just my two cents.

There are two compelling reasons to look at the Letus.

1) it does the flip for you
2) it's about half the cost of the others.

The other ones cost more and don't do the flip. The Letus is in a class all by itself for that reason, and that makes some people very, very interested in it.

Flipping

Flipping

I agree with Barry. It flips the image going into the camera.

I was just about to post this point anyway.

THE IMAGE IS RIGHT SIDE UP!

After making one music video with the Redrock I can't imagine editing a short film much less a feature upside down in my NLE.

When all is said and done none of these systems are "cheep"... you need rails, a collection of lenses, matte box or at least a clip on french flag. And a follow focus if you want to do things right. My point is, no matter what adapter you get, you'll end up paying about the same when you're done getting all you need to do the job correctly.

The flipping is what sold me on the Letus. It works and works well.

Hatts off to Quyen Le.

Or an SGpro... or an M2.... OR a Go35......

Theres Tons of options now.

Yes there are alot of options... I just wanted to start a thred to help people who are on the fence about buying a Letus35.

It's tough buying these things without trying them out first. I'm lucky to dave a DP friend with a Redrock. But others are not so lucky. You can't go to AVS, B&H, Burns and Sawyer etc and do a shootout... you have to, for the most part, trust the manufacturers website and use forums like this one to make up your mind.

Please, keep posting and asking questions about the Letus 35.

Thanks THX-1138 for this information. I'm really on the fence on all of these adapters. A lot of people say this one is better then that one and vice versa and they all do have their plus and minuses, so the more information the better.

I love the Letus Adapter! But I also would love to try others out. The flip is just awesome.

I've had some problems with it, but Quyen has always been so quick to help. Something happened with my vibration pattern. You can see the grain so well because I was shooting at 120 shutter speed for a slow motion effect.
(takes a little time to load because its uncompressed)

I wonder if Barry is experiancing this problem with his.
Anyways, there is a great forum just for the Letus that I'm sure some of you know about.

I've racked up quite a bit of hours with this little adapter so I'll be posting footage when i find the time.
I'm looking forward to getting an LetusHD100.
