New York Lately - Feature Film

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to share with you my feature film debut "New York Lately". It was shot entirely on location in and around NYC over 35 shooting days during Dec 2007 and Jan 2008. Post-production wrapped in mid-October. We used the HVX200 and Brevis. The DP who shot the film was Jason Varner -- an extremely talented individual.

I found this thread a little late in the game. The film has just recently been submitted to festivals for a 2009 run. I plan to make updates if it is accepted into any festivals (fingers crossed) and/or if there is any cool news regarding the distribution process.

SYNOPSIS:
NEW YORK LATELY is an ensemble drama following multiple characters as they weave through their daily lives struggling to find happiness. However, happiness to each of them is defined differently. The effect is a sprawling mosaic of New York City and its everyday people, living everyday lives.

Wow that looks really professional. Plus I really dig the multi-ethnicity in the piece. I don't know if you specifically wrote the race into the characters, but I appreciate a director who keeps things diverse.

I can't wait to see it. Ill probably pop around this thread again and ask some questions.

Thanks for the feedback!! I didn't mention race in the script at all, but knew all along I would try to cast a diverse group of actors. However, the criteria was also acting ability first. :)

Please do ask questions -- I never know what to really talk about so if there's anything you'd like to know feel free to ask.

Good luck with your project!! I love ensemble films and yours has a very interesting backdrop.

How did you feel about working with the brevis on the HVX? Were you satisfied with the results?

Also did you have a rehearsal period with the actors prior to shooting, or did you do a lot of rehearsal on set?

Thanks.

I think the DP would be more qualified to answer this on the technical side. However, I know it did take much longer to set up shots -- mounting to the camera, dialing in the focus...etc.

Definitely schedule the Brevis shots together, so you're your camera dept is not always mounting/dismounting the rig all the time which will eat up time.

But overall, I am extremely happy with the visual outcomes. Some of the Brevis shots are the best in the film.

Also did you have a rehearsal period with the actors prior to shooting, or did you do a lot of rehearsal on set?

A little of both. Some actors preferred to rehearse prior to the shoot, so I made the time to meet with them and work through scenes. Others preferred to just rehearse/block on the day of the shoot.

The main factor that determined the amount of rehearsal time allowed was schedule/availability of the actors.

I'm actually open to either option: some actors don't need to rehearse extensively at all and are spot on during the shoot -- while others feel the need to rehearse to find their character. I just tried to accomodate them as much as possible so they were comfortable when we shot.

Hope that helps!

Hey Gary, I just directed Molly Ryman in a short film a few months ago. I came across your website when I was looking at her previous work - glad to see this is wrapped up and hopefully coming to a festival soon. Good luck!

Thanks Will!!

And good luck with your project -- Molly is uber talented so I can't wait to see your film!

Actually, I remember reading a thread about New York Lately already. It was... about three months ago. I visited the website and watched the trailer back then. I believe I have dropped a comment, too.

It's looking like a real nice movie. I'd enjoy see it all.

Congratulations and good luck with the festivals and distribution.

I'd be very interested to see if this movie gets picked up for exhibition.

Your trailer looks really good. People trying to find love in films isn't my cup of tea, but I'd watch this.

Is this going to be released on DVD any time soon?

Also how are the festivals going? Any luck?

Thanks for checking in!!

We're still waiting to hear back from the festivals for the World Premiere in the 2009 circuit (fingers crossed) -- most of them will let us know in the next few months. We applied to tons of fests all across the country so I hope it will hit a city near you. I plan to visit as many as I can as well.

DVD dist will follow the festival run -- most likely a late 09 release.

I will definitely update this thread when we have some news to share!

Nice trailer. Definitely a movie I'd buy to see :)

Robbie

Thanks Robbie -- really appreciate that feedback.

I'll definitely share the news!! Hope to be screening in LA with this film too!

Nice - thanks for the compliment!

Needless to say, I was ecstatic when I found Christine Kerrigan’s ASSOCIATED CONTENT article listing the Best Independent Movies of 2008.

NEW YORK LATELY was listed just behind SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE — not too shabby.

I’m still waiting to hear back on when and where NEW YORK LATELY will make its World Premiere in the 2009 Festival Circuit. So technically, it actually could make a 2009 list as well. Who knows?? One can dream.

Congratulations. That is awesome, a huge honor I'm sure. When do you expect to hear from fests?

Thanks!! I was surprised and very humbled. I was never expecting that in a million years.

Hopefully this month and next we'll get word from a festival -- my fingers are crossed!!
