SxS off site backup drive - no laptop required

OK, sure we all love KxS ;-) but you might also want to check this little beauty out

http://www.nextodi.com/en/product/ND2725_en.html

The manufacturer has specifically informed me that not only can you back up SxS to it through the cameras USB port (out of the USB port on the EX1) but you can also connect the SBAC-SU10 SxS USB card reader to it and back up SxS as well. No laptop needed.

It also supports the HVX200 for backing up P2.

Other than KxS, this has to be the next best thing for minimising your SxS purchasing requirements!

Great find!

Unlike the NextOn, the SBAC needs mains power in order to work. So until the NextOn gets itself a SxS or P2 slot, in the field you're still better off with a laptop, for now.

Also the model mentioned, the ND 2725, isn't available on the only US website linked to by the manufacturer.

If you're using the KxS solution, then you're good to go. The SDHC cards slot right in and you're done. Finding a field power unit to work the NextOn shouldn't be a big deal, one way or another.

If SxS, then you're almost, but not quite there, not just yet...

Cheers

Hi Chris,

Ah, I see yo have now noticed it can back up from the SBAC. All the SBAC needs is a 12v input so I can see a pretty effective solution. Use one of these http://www.dolgin.net/EX-Vadapter.htm as a power source for both the devices with a U30.

Nexto are investigating the powering options at the moment as per my suggestion above.

PS: Yep, we all know KxS is 'better' but it isn't peoples 'only' choice and none of us should be telling people what they should do as they have to be comfortable with their own choices. Its not like I am not pro KxS now am I ;-)

Actually, the best solution possible is using the KxS and download using the SD card slot in the hardrive,

sorry

Yeah, that's pretty good. If the NextTo is 12v powered as well then that's very elegant.
I use KxS most of the time, unless I have to overcrank, in which case I use SxS.

The NextTo is easy to power through 12v as it comes with a car cigarette lighter power adaptor. I used to power my CF Nexto backup drive from a V-lock battery in the same way.

USB on-the-go has been available for a long time, I've bought several cheap battery-powered USB-OTG enclosures. None have ever delivered the speed that the Nexto is claiming though; all my other OTG solutions have been limited to about 2 minutes per gigabyte, whereas the Nexto is claiming about 40 seconds per gigabyte.

I've got a Nexto 2525, it's a pretty good little product, it backs up Red CF cards very quickly (about 5 min. for 8GB). The 2725 looks like it adds an SD slot (great for HMC150 users) and a USB-OTG port.

I' ve got a 2725 here for testing and Barry is correct as always-- it adds SD slot as well as USB. I've been able to download from P2 and from SxS based cameras through the USB and it retains directory structure. The unit is branded as Nexto Video.

The 2725 (Video) is considerably more expensive-- $700 for 160gb version-- but I think the whole Nexto concept itself is an excellent one.

I have only one caveat-- which is the same caveat as I have for Firestore, nNovia, etc etc-- it is hard drive based. Hard drives crash. Maybe not often. But do you want your only shot of BigFoot riding bareback on the Loch Ness monster to be trusted to a mechanical device?

Having said that, Sony was showing under glass at DV Expo a similar device for SxS cards. Rep was hinting at the $2K price point. Makes Nexto seem even more desirable.

Bottom line here-- I really like the product. I think it has lots of possibilities. And it will also lead more people to either prayer or sympathetic magic for the health of the internal hard drive.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I'd prolly only use this in the field, replacing a laptop.
As soon as I got it back to post, though, the media would be copied off, first thing.
But I'm also using my laptop to burn DL-DVD copies of the BPAV folders on site...

None of the previous OTG solutions will work with the EX1 and the Sonu SBAC USB reader and probably the HVX200 (from what I am told). The OTG functions have been upgraded on this one to support these 'video' interoperabilities.

On the Hard Drive side, don't forget about the plethora or solid state 2.5" hard drives hitting the market. You don't have to use a rotating disc platter drive and with drives like Intels latest SSDs, performance of the drive itself is very high, and reliability is as good as keeping it on SxS.

All the OTG stuff works with the HVX200. Does the EX1's USB port not support MSC? If it does, then any OTG solution should work (although probably slower than the Nexto, which seems to be really speedy for OTG).

I don't believe it does. Nexto have told me for example, the EX1 is not compatible with the 2700 (which has OTG). Their description was pretty simple, saying "Some professional video cameras use different mechanisms for the USB interface. The USB host interface of ND2700 does not work with Sony PMW-EX1."

The 2725 definitely is compatible with the EX-1. I've connected it to both EX-1 and EX-3 and it does work.
