SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

shocker. i gotta say, i simply don't get some of the fanboy comments on that thread.

- "Jim, you are a marketing savant."

- "You are a nightmare for your competition!"

- "this team continues to push the envelope to build the best camera at an unheard of price tag"

- "I hail RED for its dedication to continuous improvement, and its push to add every bit of value to its products before they release."

really, the whole ever changing camera concept is just kind of annoying at this point. now i'm REALLY hoping nikon's next announcement is an amped up D90 in the D#00 or D# lines.

Oh brother.

Red is definitely going to win the award for "most annoying marketing strategy ever". This is like listening to a teenage girl talk about her boyfriend decisions, they change by the week.

Nothing against the products, I am sure they will impress but this has the maturity level of a two year old. Maybe I am wrong and it is a brilliant marketing strategy as lots of camera geeks also have the attention span of a two year old so in this way, they get that hit of anticipatory adrenaline every week at the thought of new RED toys? It's like they introduce new line of fictional products every week!

Mark my words, this stuff is going to start pissing off some of the real pros who actually do real work. RED is becoming the boy who cried wolf. If there is really a year of this before these products are purchasable, many potential buyers will go elsewhere.

I do have to say that real pros who do real work are probably not really affected by their ever changing cameras. However, they are pissing people with real interests in these damned things off. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the RED ONE. It's incredible, point blank n'simple but this BS just needs to stop.

If this announcement isn't the actual cameras shipping then it's probably as worthless as the announcement before it... and before that. Wow. I can actually write that without exaggerating.

I do feel where you guys are coming from, and another announcement does sound kind of silly, but if all you guys care about are when the cameras ship then why not avoid going to red's site and just wait until the shipping announcement is made?

I guess I'd rather have an announcement than no announcement and be in the dark to what they are working on and thinking about releasing.

what's the sense of an announcement if it's unreliable. they are the only company that behaves like this. if this kind of thing happens to any big company, heads will be rolling for sure. i now believe that the new red cameras don't and will never exist. that's why jim won't accept deposit. clever SOB. :Drogar-Thinking(DBG

its a pipe dream, oh I can hear the red chearleaders getting mad, this mental masturbation about future projects is really getting annoying, what is the point of annoucing products if they dont exist and most likley will change, what is so cool about that?

I really don't even read the RED threads anymore. When the Scarlet actually hits the market I will look into them. Until then see you 2009 when it gets delayed to 2010.

One pro I worked with HATES the Red One, but grudgingly uses them on projects because that is what the client demands.

In his opinion, it's more cost effective to shoot 35mm film.

GAah, every time I post anything red related I feel like I'm fanning the fire, and wasting more time on cameras that don't yet exist.

Lets not start bad mouthing the Red One. Its a great cam and many highly talented people swear by it. No camera will please everyone.

I just had a friend who is not up on all of this stuff e-mail me this morning, asking me if I think he should wait for the new RED Scarlet. I told him that at this point, RED seems really confused about what they are actually doing and it will be many months and possibly years before he can just call them and order a shipping camera. (besides a RED One)

We have to live in the here and now and there are plenty of other great cameras that are sitting in warehouses, waiting to be delivered. Real cameras, that you can do real work with...today.

Perhaps someday I will buy a RED, when I actually can.

Dan

To be fair, you can buy a RED One right now, today, as they've caught up on the backorders. A Scarlet, no, but there is a RED you can get right now.

I have read about lockups and audio issues in some cases although these are rarely mentioned on the forums. I just read a article on a greek trade magazine (Film and Video Business) about a RED One rental company in Greece that received their camera in May 2008. The owner mentioned that the camera will be set to Red for a free replacement of the audio board and a fix for the fan system for operating in high ambient temperatures. Greece is usually 30-35 degrees C in the summer.
