Traveling Lightweight Tripod

I've got Miller Solo DV CF sticks wiith a 516 head. The 516 is probably a little heavy for what you want, but the sticks are 2 1/2 pounds lighter than the Bogen's you're looking at. The Millers also come with a strap so you can throw them over your shoulder (but no case). I carry them with the legs pointing up and the head (where the weight is) down low. These are also great because you can spread the legs wide and get down really low to the ground. It looks like an M60 machine gun when set up.

See them here:

Hope you post some video of your travels. Good luck!

You guys are heavy weights.
I have a 516 head, and hate the size and weight of that thing.
I'll sell it to who ever wants it...or trade for lighter one.

As for the question....

I bought a light weight tripod from best buy...can't remember the name, but it was the top of the line they carried.

It was light weight and very nice...think it was a bogen, but can't be sure...
I never look at them things, just size it up and buy or not buy...

I used it last weekend...
it does what I need it to do...hold a camera steady.

These cameras are not that heavy, I don't need much. The tripods you are looking at are great, but for me, are too heavy to cary any distance on my person.

That Bogen rig is a bit on the heavy side if you want to go back packing with it. It has been done though. You may want to look into something like these:

Best lightweight tripod

Best lightweight tripod

After 10 years of shooting news, production and documentaries in Asia, the Middle East & the United States, I can say with 110% certainty that the Libec TH-M20 is the best light weight fluid head tripod for HVX sized cameras.
It light, sets up supper fast, smooth as silk and its indestructible.
There are many nice tripods, but when it comes to portability none that come even close to the Libec TH-M20.

I own three nice tripods but the Libec is the one that always travels.

Yeah man those Miller sticks look perfect for what I am after. I have never owned a pro tripod though, so another dumb question -

Can I get the Bogen 503HDV head and just stick it on those Miller sticks? Do I need to buy something else with it, or is everything I need included to just hook the head on the sticks?

Thanks for the advice. Really appreciate it.

go with Miller

go with Miller

I was in the same position of looking for a light, reliable, bulletproof tripod. After much research I bought the Miller ds10. It has carbon sticks that are incredibly light and lock down solid. The head is perfect for anything from a DVX up to the HPX 200.

You won't be disappointed in this tripod!

If you feel that you just want the legs but want to use the bogen 503 head you will need a half ball adapter since I believe the 503 head has a flat bottom that screws to the 3/8 in stud, and the Miller sticks have the bowl. Don't buy the adapter from Miller as Bogen has the same one for about half the price.

Just my 2 cents.

Well your 2 cents seem right on. This setup looks perfect for me, and I am probably going to go with it. I would much rather pay a couple hundred more to get that Miller DS10 head instead of the Bogen 503HDV. It is just tough for me to dish out $1000+ for it. But I guess you get what you pay for.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
