"Halo - Operation Chastity" - fan film production blog

Don't worry... it should all work out. Just make sure you're organized and that you have a plan to shoot and complete. What'll upset people is not that you make mistakes, but that you don't complete the project. ;-)

Just thought I'd throw this up here - a press release that was sent out end of last month:

"Operation Chastity" Warthog Project Officially Begins

31st October 2008

Following on from the recent news that the Halo 3: Recon is in development by Bungie and Microsoft, news can finally be released that the not-for-profit fan-film of the Halo franchise, "Operation Chastity", has officially entered pre-production. And what better day than Halloween to announce the official start of Operation Chastity’s M12 ‘Warthog’ LRV construction project.

The story of Operation Chastity follows a group of United Nations Space Command Marines fighting the survivors of a crashed alien Covenant battleship, and their final battle in the conflict – a secret mission behind enemy lines which none of them are sure they will return from. The film is a self-funded effort, with an estimated budget of around £30,000, and shooting planned to commence in Winter 2009 in the United Kingdom. The film project is in no way affiliated with Bungie Studios, Microsoft Game Studios or WETA studios, and is an independent work.

The vehicle that is going to be used for the project is an A-reg 1984 Land Rover Defender 110, rescued from the GumTree 4x4 yard before its eventual scrapping due to MoT failure. Being rebuilt by Props Studios, the vehicle will be fitted with a whole new body, chunky off road tyres, lifted suspension and a whole host of other upgrades to make it into the futuristic combat vehicle. This is certainly not going to be your average Land Rover!

In the games, the Warthog LRV was the vehicle of choice for Master Chief John-117, the superhuman Spartan raised from a boy to become humanity’s greatest soldier as he went across the universe and eventually home to Earth fighting the Covenant. The vehicle being made for Operation Chastity, however, will be used by the Marines of the 267th Division as they fight the alien invaders on human soil.

And it is also hoped that a second vehicle, in the troop carrier format, will also be able to be added to the Marines armoury in time for shooting to commence!

More updates will be released as and when they come.

Writer/Director/Producer, Operation Chastity

Lots has been going on since then. Weapons are in production now, I'm talking with people from universities about small-scale miniatures for CG compositing, and I've got a production team together who will be assisting with crewing up and sourcing locations/cast. More updates should be due soon - word has it the vehicle should be done by Christmas!

Having just spoken to International Artistes I can feel that I am within a few hairs breadths of securing my first name talent for the movie - not a huge name, but definitely a memorable character within the genre. I'll keep you all posted! :D

Well, it's been a while since I posted here hasn't it. Lets post a little pic, to get everyone in the mood:

Operation Chastity is plodding along. As is our Warthog, funnily enough:

It seems that, as more and more goes on and we start to show just how serious we intend to be, buzz builds in the Halo fan community. Our posts, at first, were met with scepticism by fans - they questioned if anything we were planning would happen even remotely. As progress shots come in, they warm to it all, ask more and more questions. That pleases me a lot - questions are *awesome*. I also like that my ambition is inspiring so many others to support or join the project.

In fact, such questions got me noticed by the game's makers, Bungie Studios. Had a pleasant chat with one of the guys at Bungie just the other day, who was forwarding information as we spoke to the guys in the studio. They seemed excited and pleased by my efforts - as the guy said, if we were building this vehicle, then bad-ass. That was reassuring.

The name I mentioned before is still very interested. Once the script is completed it will be passed by him to see if he still fancies it. I hope he does - he would bring a lot to the production.

Only eight months to go. I am absolutely petrified, but this is already shaping up to be, as the guy at Bungie said - bad-ass. :D

Thanks :)

Been chatting away to a couple of colleagues this week and it seems I now have a props department! A September kick-off date doesn't seem at all unrealistic now. :)

Thanks Joseph - if you want to read about it some, check it out at http://www.propsstudios.co.uk/warthog for the full writeup! :)

I'll email you sometime. This has taken over a little in the past couple of weeks though - it's really taking off!

I also am starting to agree with you about selling the props. Battlestar Galactica are selling their props, even full size Raptor Space Jets! So I do think your selling idea will work and the more PR you do now the better.

You need to get a myspace page, linked in and a facebook ASAP. I'm behind on getting these as well. We're thinking of changing the name of "voices" so it might be best for us, but for you go ahead and get google working for you.

Being a fan of halo myself brings to the table the fact that ... anything... made, brought up and especially acted upon is worth it involving such a massively amazing video game phenomenon Like The Big "H" = and with that I'll throw my personal two cents in and say - DO IT-
Though it has much potential to be a hit or miss kind of project, there will be ample support from fans out there, I guarantee it!

That is exactly what I am counting on! I am having so many crew just say yes for kicks, and every last one of them Halo fans. Every member of the crew is either into Halo or, if they weren't before, they read up on it and played it and got into it after. It's great - and there's no way I'm stopping. The commitment from everyone is too good to deny. :)

A few pieces of in-progress concept art - I will replace these once we have the final pieces done.

Wow! Concept Art?! You're really doing this Peter. This is like a multi-million dollar operation! I'm super excited. I hope I can come over one weekend, maybe PA for you or whatever you need. Like you said the Atlanta-London Airfare is pretty inexpensive. But wow! I'm excited.

And for a good reason!

Now wait till you hear the music!

Eres, you're helping him on the music! Oh I know I'm excited now. Your music is awesome! I've gotta get to London!

Well, cat's out of the bag on that one now. XD

I'm taking a very professional and hardcore route on this, as are my own modelmaking and prop crews and everyone else involved. I want this to be the best fan-film the world has seen, and not simply the most expensive! :)

Well I'm just floored. Peter you're putting together a bang up team. One to be truly proud of. I think the buzz you're going to create on this is going to open doors never thought possible. I have to figure out a way to be apart of it. I don't just want to get a "Thank You" in the credits. :)

Maybe I can shoot some footy for you State Side. - We'll see, I guess.

Hey, Joseph! I didn't know it's you! how are you my friend? are the plans working themselves out?

I needed your inspiring words today. Thank you very much!
