HMC-150 review from DV.com

Not to detailed of a review, but glad to know that AVCHD has become a contender in the HD market.

I guess I'm still waiting to see how the image compares the HPX170 and HVX200A.

Yeah, that's a surprisingly light article. Videomaker has an even less detailed "review" as well.

So, I went and I saw them side by side at DV Expo, and Panasonic was saying that the HMC has the same lens and CCD's that the HPX 170 has, so they are going to have to be extremely close. Panasonic said the diff between the 170 and HMC 150 was very small, was found more in the features like adjustable frame rates the 170 has that the 150 does not.

I ended up buying the HMC 150, because of that and the extreme difference in the cost of the media. It's just too attractive a proposition to be able to record such beautiful HD images to a 16GB class 6 card that I only paid $50 for from Fry's.

So far all I can say about IQ is that the IQ certainly is beter than my XHA1 at 1080/60i. This morning I will do some more extensive testing.

The difference is to my eyes.. really non-existant. I'll have some footage comparing the two next week. I loved my HVX but I think I'm selling it. I feel like a SMUCK shooting to P2 when the SD stuff looks just as good and I can roll and roll and roll and the client can even take the media away them at the end of the shoot.

THE LCD is also awesome. I don't have to use the focus assist like I did with the HVX.... Love the low-light and the weight... For my point of view, I could buy two HMCs for the cost of just one 170...

cheers to panny for putting this out

I've been so close to pulling the trigger on one of these. Dumb as this sounds the only reason I haven't yet, besides not needing to add to my video equipment debt, is the aesthetics. On a less shallow note it probably won't be long, they are pretty darn cool. I'm hoping the price drops down a bit more/ big rebate deal in a month or 3.

I don't think aesthetically it's a step back. It looks very much like the HVX and I actually think it's a bit cooler. A bit more 2.0 if you'd say. It's not shabby or "consumer" lookign at alll and for atleast a little while it will be new and shiny

Is the LCD on the HMC150 higher res than the HVX? I wish they had put in a 920K pixel LCD like in the new Sony F1000

I'll say. Perhaps Mr. Gloman only had the camera for a short time, but this review seemed to just gloss over the cam's strengths (and weaknesses). No res-chart tests, no sound tests, so side by side with others in its class. More like a preview than review.

The LCD is awesome in comparison... You can actually tell you are in focus. I'm not sure about the F1000 but it looks as good as the LCD I've seen on the A1 and the EX1. It's really a vast imprvoement. The 200 and 200a both really stink for LCD.. This one looks great and Barry has said that its about the same as the 170 so I'd love to see that one too...

There's more improvments on this cam than detractors. The only thing that I know I'm going to miss is the timelapse.. and possibly the abiltiy to play back the clips in Slowmo, but I think that the advantages far outweigh the cons. I just can't see paying 2600 bucks for a 64 gig card to basically give me the same run time in 1080 or 720, that a 28 dollar card will do. That's a 100x mark up and I'm jumping ship. My HVX will probably be going on sale within the week...
