SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

Your probably right. I'm sure that the early dslr still produce fine pictures. I kind of expected to at least be able to print larger format.
With the war on numbers i just don't see how red can make a statement in the dslr world with 4.98MP. Thats why i say why include it at all?
Anyway it is just my opinion.

I'm happy for Red but am more excited about the competition's reaction.

Although has the competition ever reacted to the Red1?

What will this do to the sub $10k market? the sub $6k market? How much time does the competition have until their sales start to shrink due to higher specs for less money?

The Red1 seemed to be successful, as in it was actually released, works and is now a part of the industry, so I wouldn't doubt the Scarlet or Epic from coming out or being in someone's hands in a year.

Everyone should be happy for competition. Red's technology/price is a fast wave of high tech, where the past 20 years have been a slow trickle by everyone else.

Is it just me or is all of this vapourware really confusing? It would be nice if they would put together some packages with popular configurations and gave us prices for the packages. As it sits, a nice fully loaded Scarlet looks as if it could easily surpass a loaded RED One, which is fine, but it is quite a far cry from a "3K for $3k" that all of the fanboys were in a lather about.

I also agree that if all of these cameras are only limited to REDCODE RAW and CMOS with a rolling shutter, then they are of limited appeal to me.

A lot of noise in those specs that we will need to have clarified.

Personally I find the film camera modular approach will be appealing only to true filmmakers who are used to 200 piece film camera packages. For the rest of the world, hobbyists, tv people, documentarians, I think that this approach may not be as appealing as RED hopes it is (if they are trying to become a more mass appeal, mass market product).

A lot of fireworks, not sure if it's time to celebrate yet.

Dan

Agreed... Still, it's quite an announcement. I pulled up red.com this morning, to see if they'd come through with anything juicy... and spat coffee on myself when that first image loaded. If the renders are anything like the shipped system, then I think it's probably time to sell some gear. ^_^

I am with you Dan. After all the celebration, this is what I see is going to happen:

early 2010 : Scarlet S35 + Epic S35 because they already have the tech for the S35 sensor.

2011 : Scarlet FF35 + Epic FF35 + Scarlet 2/3"

2012: Epic 3D

I dont think Epic 645 and Epic 617 are going to make it at all (maybe in the next 5 years after the S35 and FF35 are all in mass production).

Plus, judging from the Red One experience, you DO NOT want to own the early batch of anything from RED.

Not Impressed!
I found myself on the band wagon early when Red and Jannard anncounced an affordable lightweight product a hi-def camera was going to replace my trusty DVX100b as it did with my Betacam. I joined RedUSER then ScarletUser and as months went by reading nothing but banter from one member to another...about dreams based on a few crumbs of information from the "God of RED" I got frustrated and left the group believeing that all that was being offered was vaporware. The projected release dates of the first version of Scarlet ....a camera all could afford.... were not to be. Then it seems Nikon and Canon release a couple of nice DIgital Still with Motion products and the next thing I read is " we are starting over...but wait till you see whati it will be !!!!"
Well it is pretty simple what it is....more CG Images of slick looking units and price tags that are very different from what was originally to be....more promises NOT to meet dealines since there aren`t any !
When I read elsewhere, meaning other than reduser and scarletuser I see many of the owners of the oringinal redcamer are less than enthused with it. As recently as last weekl in our Marketplace a comment regarding the red for sale referred to it as being one of the more stable red cameras out there.....
So those are some of my reasons for NOT being impressed with the latest offering in hi rez cg from Jim Jannard. He is certainly a hell of a marketer and obviously a success. But I aìnt buying this nonsense. Panasonic, Nikon,Canon=less bs and more real camera.

Given the absence of pricing information, it looks like even the bottom of the line fixed lens "new" Scarlett could also end up a far cry from "3K for $3K." I was planning to wait for Scarlett specs and pricing to firm up before deciding on a pending camera purchase, but it looks like that is not going to happen anytime soon.

Yeah right, they all offer cameras that do work.
But each has its own limitations and even if it´s only an unaffordable price.
The RED One is a first generation camera built from scratch.
It´s out there and working.
Not working for all and everything, but this also goes without saying for the HVX, the EX1, the Varicam or the CineAlta.

And of course, any camera you can buy NOW is more REAL than the Scarlet or Epic...

thisi is all one big mental masturbation, all I see is a lot of people loosing a lot of money, people that own 4-6 red one's, I sure called it though, the original red one is going to become obsolete if this is all true

This is all assuming that Red hasn't learned from their past experiences. The Red One was their first camera.

Is it really obsolete if they will give you full trade in value? Or if they are willing to upgrade your Red1 sensor? Or if they give you the first Scarlet/Epic just for being a Red1 owner?

I'm a little confused... It seems like you're referring to two separate markets with that statement. Panasonic and Canon both make great camcorders, and Nikon and Canon both make great DSLRs, but there's not really a market shared by all three.

In any market, there are going to be people who jump the gun, invest too heavily, or just miss the point. Business is still business, regardless of your product. I doubt that anyone lost their shirt on Red, who had more than a few years' experience as a business owner.

I think they may have finally succeeded in extinguishing the term "soccer mom" from all discussion of the Scarlet.

It looks great on paper. I do wish it was more of a run n gun documentary type camera. I wonder what the startup record time ect. will be? Dosen't it take a while to boot up a red.

When did RED ever say that it was trying to take on the DSLR world with the Scarlet? The only version of the new Scarlet that isn't competitive in terms of pixel-count is the lowest-end version. And considering that the lowest-end Scarlet isn't even competitive in the DSLR world in terms of sensor size and lens type, why even try to compare it with DSLRs like the D90 and the 5D? What's pretty clear is that the lowest-end new Scarlet is a camcorder first, and a decent still camera second. Given RED's track record, we can reasonable expect the final product to still be a superior combination than any remotely comparable existing combo.

This is very interesting news indeed. I, like others, am skeptical about what the final cost will be to assemble even the most basic configuration.

Having said that, and I address this to all the naysayers in this thread, Jim Jannard is an innovative thinker. Even if he doesn't completely deliver on promises, he is raising the bar regarding what a video camera can do. It is companies like RED who push the technology forward and help keep the industry at large from stagnating.

I just cannot, in good conscience, say anything bad about what RED is doing, even if this is simply vaporware. Some good will come from it somewhere down the line in terms of inspiration.

I was really hoping for a CCD chipset. And 28k? What would you even do with that? How could you even process it?

4K strains systems enough. Until there is an actual camera - I am going to stay away. But if it comes out and it actually works. I might invest. Till then I am sticking to my CineAlta's and my film.
