I have spoken at length to a New Jersey engineer today and I know Jan has been very involved in communicating our concerns to engineering. I feel that, like the lens issue, Panasonic is taking this seriously and will be doing tests in NJ and Osaka.
I am happy with the response we're getting and feel comfortable that if there is a noise issue, it will be identified. My theory is that the differential in noise and sensitivity between 200A and 170 is due mainly to the different lens diameter.
The Panasonic engineer did tell me that the processing circuitry is completely different on the 170 vs. the 200/200A/500. He was unwilling to speculate as to whether a firmware revision via SD Card could be implemented to change gain structure or add a -3db capability, understandably.
Actually I looked at Jeff's camera today. At first look it seemed to have more sensitivitiy than the other 170 I had sitting next to it. So I did a reset on the camera's scene files , reset the User files and then set it to 1080/24P for comparison. It then looked like the 170 that I had, which I did the exact same thing(reset everything)
I then compared it to the HVX200A, it was quieter. It had a slightly different texture but nothing adverse, nice in fact. Then I check resolution, it clearly had more resolution than the HVX200A. But in an effort to make it look like the HVX200A I added +2 to the Detail coring and then the cameras were very close. The 170 still had a little more resolution.
I shipped Jeff's camera back to him this afternoon, he should have it tomorrow.
