This is my first time directing a music video.

It's all 1 take, uncut, and shot on the HVX (obviously). We had a budget of $42 (for gaff tape)

I'm in my 4th year at the University of South Carolina and I'm desperately seeking feedback (positive or negative) to see if directing is something I am actually good at and should pursue.

Let me know what you think about the video!

I liked it!!! definately creative compared to most hip hop that im forced to work with.

My only criticism is that i found the stuff that you left the rapper to go see was not all that interesting. the people chillin at the couch just kinda didn;t fit to me.

the concept start up though i enjoyed when you go behind him and the stage lights turn on. Nice way to introduce things.

Was this truly a one take video? steadicam???

thanks for the comment sebassttiann, and taking the time to watch it!

i see what you mean with the people on the couch

yeah it was 1 take on a Steadicam. We did 15 takes, the one I used was take 14.

yeah i just felt like it maybe could have been tied together a bit better with the content of what you cut away too. Trust me though i would leap at the chance to work with a hip hop artists who would want something like this soooo i commend you and hope you get to do more creative stuff with hip hop. my clients want the typical club stuff.

It's okay. Personally, I didn't care for it. Your song was very repetitive and that means you need a variety of shots to keep the viewer interested. Not the case here... one continuous shot just didn't work for me. The speed and overall feel didn't work for me. Also... I wouldn't want my lead actor/performed hidden so much by the darkness.

I like the concept ,but I think you stayed to long away from the main guy.
over all I think you will make it as a director, good job.

If this was for a different song and group, it would probably get a big reception and would get you far. I don't think the 1 take nature helped it, however. A repetitive song like this needs more activity and more lighting. I know it's weird to use lighting against you since there were some really clever uses of light but when the main guy has no backlight and is in the darkness most of the time, it's hard to get connected with him

I thought it was interesting and it held my attention because of the reveals with light you did. It was a little slow but it fit the mood and I watched til the end.

Great job! I love the layout of the vid and the music is sick. Also good job on using the light to bring different subjects into view. But as said by some other ppl some of the scenes were a little bit too dark and I got a little lost. Other than that keep it up.

Hi,

Good job on the video.

To see if this is something you want to do is a question only you can answer. You are at the beginning of your career so lack the experience in this field and unfortunatly experience is something you get right after when you could have used it the most.

If you really enjoyed this project you should not give up and follow your dreams (I know it sounds cheesy.) We take inspiration from all sources and learn from our peers.

Here is a link to a video that was done in 1994. It is very similar to what you did, One take steadicam with no cuts but they had more then $42. Hopefully it will inspire you to do more things.

Very cool man! I liked it a lot. What was the frame rate and shutter speed you used to get the video to look so dark/slow motion feel?
