Promotional Video for a High School

Segarza,

Great piece. Beautiful colors and way to keep the camera moving. That kept the pacing and energy of the video.

Was this original HVX200 or 200a? Also what were your scene file settings. The colors were amazing!

Thank you Chenopup!

I used the original HVX200.

Everything except slomo was shot in 1080i 24pA

Scene File:

M.Ped -3 to -5 (depending on the scene)

Color corrected in FCP using Magic Bullet Colorista.

Muy buen trabajo. Te felicito.

On a previous post I asked you how long did it take to produce. I have an idea but it is important for some to know that Rome wasn't built in one day. So, How long did it take you for this one?
and, Is that your VO on the videos?:)

Thanks guys! Gracias!

We shot for 6 days with a 4-5 person crew. We could've moved faster, but we had to follow class schedules, sports activities, etc. Plus moving the equipment in campus turned out to be slow and complicated, with few or very small elevators and long distances between setups.

Add another week for VO (not my voice), editing and color correction. Budget was around US$7k.

Would you consider the budget to be below average, average or above average for a similar production in the US?

Salvador for a 6 days 4-5 people camera rental fee. lights grip, etc. It would cost more than your total budget.
Not to say that if I liked the project (for demo use or whatever) I wouldn't have done it.
I recently shot a commercial for a national Barack Obama campaing for $1,200 (A 15 sec testimonial http://exposureroom.com/members/DouglasVillaba.aspx/assets/eca9c933923f46c0bb4adc637fcca969/). I own my camera and lights so my expenses were only the crew, but I can use it as demo for the next political campaigns.

Thank you Douglas! So I guess it's way below average. I, too, own my equipment, that's the only way I've been able offer competitive pricing and still make a profit.

Great looking footage.

Prices can greatly vary depending on your location too. Think about the cost of living in LA vs. rural Alabama.

Thanks Mike!

I'm in northern Mexico in a medium sized city (pop 800,000) where we're considered to be one of the most expensive production houses, however with those same rates in Mexico City or Monterrey we are very competitive.

I loved it, it looked extremely professional. Did you use any specific scene files? Did you do any CC in post?

Really well produced piece.

7K for a 4-5 man crew, 6 day shoot, AND the post production!? that's CRAZY low. I can't even see how you pulled a profit, even with your own equipment... I mean, just the crew members' day rate here would throw you over budget.

The only way I could manage something on that budget would have to be a 2 man crew (myself include as director, cam op, and editor), and maybe a PA on set for $100 day. That's it.

Great job.

Thanks Ryan! I should move to the states :p

That's the thing, I usually write the scripts, direct, dp and edit. Motion graphics designer is on payroll, as well as two of the crew members.

It is doable. It'll eventually catch up with you.

Overhead starts getting bigger and when you look back there was no real profit at all. (Cell phones, electric bill, internet, secretaries, taxes, insurance, new computers, new cameras and on and on).

Maybe your cost of living is less, but replacement cost is the same.

Replacement costs are actually higher, considering the ridiculous import taxes we have. Cost of living and wages, however, are significantly lower. My rate or profit (as a director/dp/editor) usually ends up ranging anywhere from around 40% to 50% from the total.
