options for running off hours of raw footage

i trying to find the best/quickest option for running off raw footage from ex1 or ex1 bpav folders (downconverted to sd dvd). i just want to be able to hand hours of raw to the clioent so they can play it on a dvd player.

back with dv cam, i was able to capture into fcp and run a second s-video to a dvd recorder at the same time killing 2 birds with one stone.

Drag and drop files from BPAV folder onto timeline set to DVD compliant project, burn to disc from timeline. This is with Edius, not sure that anything else can do this - you can put 2 hours plus on a DVD if you set the data rate to about 3.5mbs with 48k pcm audio, which is fine for viewing .... Edius with Procoder express will encode at twice realtime and burn at say 12X so an hour and 15 mins for 2 hours of footage..... or just output from the EX1 as SD straight from your capture cards to the DVD recorder, assuming it accepts analogue video and audio.

wish i could do that but im on mac with final cut. thats not even close to any possibilities on mac, damn

as far as output direct from ex1 cam, the downconvert on the ex1 is worse than you tube, its horrible. i wish they made a dvd recorder with sdi input for less but the cheapest i found was $4000,

im just trying to run off quick raw for client. keep in mind im shooting 1080 60i so the interlacing issue downconverting is problematic with most encoders. progressive footage seems to downconvert nicely so its possible the ex1 downconvert looks better with that type footage. so the best quality seems to be from the new xdcam browser downconvert export option. but very very time comsuming

back with dvcam i used to capture the footage in final cut and run another s-video signal riught into a dvd recorder realtime at the same time. so mnuch easier back then

I must say I found the SD from the camera perfectly good for viewing with material shot at HQ 50i - I just tested the DVD creation in Edius - 32 mins for encode and 8 mins total for burn - this for 1 hour of EX1 HQ footage.

Bootcamp?

when i said sd from ex1 was horrible i was referring to the realtime downconvert from the camera its self out of the av or component outputs. software encoding techniques are vast, some work well some dont. ive heard certain NLE's are better than others. its possible edius does a better job than fcp on mac.

Got a capture card in the mac? like a Black magic or Kona Card?

I'd go Native EX HD timeline in final cut - take the composite downconverted output off the card straight into a dvd recorder.. and just play down the timeline.

That way you dont have to do any software downconverts..

those cards dont work on my macbook pro. i would need a macpro. i have a $1600 mxo2 from matrox which does the same thing. it does a good job but the problem is it records to the dvd recorder in (anamorphic mode) and although it plays fine on a 16x9 tv, when i put it on a 4x3 tv it squeezes the widescreen into 4x3. i try setting the dvd to play in different modes and it does not respond, ive tried this on 2 separate 4x3 tv/dvd set ups.

when i make a software encode via compressor/dvdsp on my mac it shows up as wide screen on the 4x3 setup the way it should. very frustrating.

Hi Adam,

In the MXO2 control panel under the video out tab there are options for the HD to SD aspect ratio. Sounds like you are set to anamorphic which will look fine on a 16:9 display but will appear squeezed on a 4:3 monitor. If you need to go to a 4:3 display you have the option to set the aspect ration to letter box or center cut.

Chris.

Toast works wonderfully for this sort of thing, just click on DVD-Video in toast, drag the clips you want on the DVD from the BVAP folder onto toast and click burn... Couldn't be simpler.

yes i see that too. but when i make a downconvert (softtare encode) with dvdsp and choose letter box, it will play letter box on 4:3 tv's and will be able to play full on a 16:9 as long as you set your tv to the right setting (just like a retail dvd behaves from netfilx), when i use the mxo2 that is nort possible with any settings. thats the problem. its either set for 16x9 tvs or 4:3 tv's.

yes i know but i need the dvd to be compatible with both 16x9 and 4:3 tv's. if i choose the other options it would not play full on wide screen tv's. i think i just need a stand alone dvd player that can record the anamorphic flag, but i spent 3 hours googling yesterday and found nothing

im all for it but......

1. i dragged an mp4 from the bpav folder and toast 9 did not recognize
2. dragged the entire bpav folder but it sayed the clip failed to load

how exactly are you dragging the clips from the bpav folder.

the other problem is id like it to play as one file. i have a bpav folder with 55 takes and everytime the camera starts/stops, toast usually makes an abrupt 1 second stall before it plays the next clip

im very interested in this process with toast
