Price Redustions for EX1

Just wondering if anyone's heard of price reductions coming for the EX1 - with the economy the way it is and NAB not too far around the corner?

(Little misspelling in the thread title - caught it too late to fix - Do-oh!)

No - the price won't be dropping anytime soon, and the Japanese yen / US Dollar rate isn't helping Sony/Panasonic/JVC/Fujinon etc. We are extending our specials on the PMW-EX1/EX3s again to allieviate our troubled economy.

My guess is sales are not slowing that much do to the hack for using cheap sd cards to record on.

Anyone know how many ex-1's have been sold worldwide? I thought I read a post where BG said over 100,000 hvx's have now been sold worldwide.

Yeah, kinda sad. Car dealerships seem to always be the economic canaries for every recession. And gas is becoming more affordable. Just can't win, sometimes.

I doubt we would see an EX series price drop anytime soon, Sony probably know now they have to make as much on the camera as they can because the card sales revenues with new camera sales will probably be much lower. They still make good money on batteries....

Your probably right regarding price but surely the credit crunch is going to effect everything? Sony should drop it's price by 10% at least while times are bad and they would shift more.

Is this website to be marketed now as the SXS Killer???
Just a few days from getting 4 Kensington Readers to go with a few Sandisk 16gigs to test it out.

It is so handy to not have the HD on top of the camera and have to navigate my hands around it all the time (I had it on the back hotshoe)

I don't like to think of KxS as a SxS killer. We are not doing this to beat Sony, we are doing this to help ourselves. If Sony want to continue to charge 10x the price for SxS then most peoples choice will be obvious as I think more important to most is the ability to have enough media to record their requirements in the field without offloading, rather than offloading and having to format.

What is funny though is with the Ultra II, offload times are only about half the speed of SxS. On my laptop I get a 16GB card offloaded in about 15.5minutes, with SxS that would be about 7-8min. With SxS the desitination was the bottleneck anyway...

You may want to try different card readers.... Better yet, Ask SanDisk what the optimal card reader for the specific card. Can't remember which SanDisk CF cards I got and was told to use a certain SanDisk card reader to get maximum download speed.

In this case (transferring files to your laptop) the bottleneck is the Ultra II SDHC cards. They are 15MB/s. The SxS transfer at twice the speed.

Hmm... frisco may be right.
Maybe SanDisk will come out with a reader that will access the new Extreme III 30MB/s at it's full 30MB/s ability. It has to have the additional instruction set to access this speed.
These cards in standard readers only read at around 15-20MB/s.

Frisco,

When reading the Ultra II the reader isn't the problem. The card is capable of about 15MBps. 1000/15 = 66.66 therefore I should see about 1min 6sec per GB. 16GB would be 17min 45sec. As the cards arn't completely full I transfer a 16GB card in about 16min so I am getting full performance from these cards.

When transfering SxS the limitation is the write performance of the destination drive. Most hard drives struggle to write much more than a sustained 30MBps so the theoretical 100MBps read from SxS is never realised. Thats why there is such little value in SxS's full read speed, you just can't take full advantage of it in most cases. If you could, you could transfer a 16GB card in about 2.5min.

Yes Guy, this is my point exactly. The SxS cards write to the PC at about twice the speed.
The new Extreme III 30MB/s only reads at 15-20MB/s. At least with the readers I've used.

This is not a bottleneck for USB 2.0 which maxes out at 480mbps or, 60MB/s.
There might be a new reader available to get the most from the new Extreme III 30MB/s.
I've heard that without the "special" instuction set, this card will work close to their standard Ultra II 15MB/s cards.

The new Nikon D90 was designed to use the new card full 30MB/s speed.

I just found the box from my SanDisk Extreme FireWire Reader. It says on the box "Designed for 40MB/Sec Compact Flash Card.

I realize this is for CF cards and we are talking about SDHC cards and I understand the above posts about speed limits. I just wanted to point out from past experience that getting maximum download speeds it's possible that you may need a reader that is Designed for the specific card.

Seems like they didn't do a particulary good job. Thom's review of the D90 states that he gets around 20MBps out of the Extreme III 30MBps cards with a D90.

"On the D90 I've found a number of cards that give me 15MB/sec or slightly better, and with the SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s I maxed out at 20MB/s."

I just got an email from a vendor stating that Sony is planning another price increase November 25th. He wasn't sure if the price of the EX1 / EX3 would change or not. It’s a 2-7% increase on all Sony Products. The increase is due to the Japanses Yen / US Dollar Rate.
