I can't tell you how many times Blake Snyder's screenwriting book, "Save the Cat", has come up for me lately. It's been reviewed (positively) in a bunch of screenwriting blogs, and mentioned to me by a bunch of producers and writers. And recently a producer friend actually handed me a copy and told me I *had* to read it. So I did.
The book made me angry.
Now don't get me wrong, I like Blake Snyder. If you read his blog, you'll see that he's a relentlessly positive and encouraging guy. In a cynical world, that's nice to see.
But his book is all about how to write a script that is sellable, and has absolutely nothing to do with writing a script that is *good*. This has me all torn up inside, because on the one hand if you want to make a living as a screenwriter in Hollywood, yeah, it'll probably help you. What's wrong with that, really? But on the other hand, it's going to encourage the creation of an awful lot of really terrible movies right at a time when Hollywood almost seems to be realizing the importance of good writing in its blockbusters for a change.
Take this, for example. A short list of movies Snyder uses as examples of how to do things right: Miss Congeniality, Blank Check, Stop or my Mom Will Shoot. Good lord, is this the kind of movie we want more of? Does anybody even *remember* Blank Check? Wasn't that kid from Family Ties in it?
And the movie he bashes most strongly for doing things wrong: Memento. His argument being that it didn't make any money in its theatrical run. How does one even attempt to respond to that?!
So essentially I came here to rant, and to see if I have any like-minded thinkers in this forum. I don't post here much, but it seemed like a good place to find some people who care about making *good* films. I was going to post in Snyder's own forum, but that just made me feel like a troll.
