Compact AVC INTRA camcorder coming

My completely amateurish opinion is that to get the resolution people want into these smaller camcorders, the companies are gonna be focusing primarily on improving CMOS chips. A global shutter (or at least a much faster refresh rate) on CMOS will solve the issue quicker and cheaper than finding a way to get higher resolution CCDs into a small form camera. I have spoken, you may all be seated. Thank you.

Based on today's technology, yes. Unless you're willing to give up 60P. They could probably make a native 720P/30 CCD, but 720/60P required JVC to split the chip in half to get it to work.

There is no perfect solution; if it's going to be small (i.e., 1/3") it'll either be pixel-shifted CCD, or interlaced CCD like everyone else uses, or CMOS.

Hmmm. Would I be willing to give up 60P for a native 720P Sensor? Better Dynamic Range, Resolution, no rolling shutter... HD-SDI?

It's a possibility, to be honest.

Give up 720p 50/60.. aghh. i dont know if i could do that.

As much as i love CCDs.. i think i'd rather go CMOS.. i think we all know enough about them now to know their limitations.. and how to work with them.

Ultimately most of us want native 1080 chips. I would happily settle for 1080 CMOS chips using AVC Intra.

.. in saying that i'll settle for anything with AVC Intra in a hand held format.. haha

I think Panasonic has to go CMOS in the near future. With the announcement of the HPG20 we can see the potential of a small AVC-I camera, but in order to beat out the EX all together they need a bigger chip with higher resolution. Just upgrading the encoder would be an improvement of course, but with a 960x540 chip, the resolution gains would be minimal.

A 1/2" CCD would be way too hot and drain batteries very fast. CMOS technology is developing at an amazing rate and Panasonic should be able to develop chips with a much faster rolling shutter. The resolution gain is a big deal that AVC-I could take advantage of.
