I'm getting a MBP specifically for FCS2. Hence, my questions:

- Is the 2.6 ghz gonna be a slight or moderate or very noticeable improvement for render times and smooth work???

- Does the GPU (probably ge force 8600gt vs radeon1600?) have any/considerable bearing on render times??

- I heard some complaints regarding the "too glossy" display. Should I be concerned?

I could probably afford the $2100 one if it clearly outperforms the other one, plus the hd display would be nice.

Thanks very much in advance,

derek :)

If I had to choose, I'd get the first one...but the glossy screen is a huge turnoff for me. I wouldn't want to do any type of color accurate editing with a glossy screen. The rest of the specs look fine though and I personally wouldn't want a drive installed in a laptop by someone else.

People can screw things up - laptops are very intricate machines. I'd hold out, or even check Apple's refurbished store to see what you can find. Generally, you can find some good stuff there.

Here's a 17":

and here's a 15":

You can always add extra RAM, for a couple hundred bucks. You're still hitting about your price range and I've heard nothing but good things from Apple's refurbished store.

Good luck,

Thank you very much gentlemen! The apple refurb store is a good idea and if the increase is only marginal, I'll probably get one like the second one from the apple refurb store.

cheers :)

So I called apple to buy a refurb 15" MBP 2.5ghz, 2gb, 250gb, ge force 8600gt 512mb for $1499 but the guy tells me it's glossy (which I was against after reading numerous opinions) but they have a matte, brand new on clearance for $1799 a

and I say, "I have to think about it.."

and he tells me: "what if I offer you additional discount? Will you consider buying right now?"

I agree. He puts me on hold....

Comes back nd says

1599!!!

Brand new!! Better than used on e-bay! + all the support!

I think I like apple :)

I guess its all personal preference, but I don't think the glossy screen works very well. Besides, what if you're editing/color correcting on the go or on-location?

I think the matte screens are fantastic and the colors are vibrant and accurate enough. What kind of screen did you end up getting and what were the specs? I know what you called to buy, but what did you end up with?

Thanks and congratulations on your purchase! That's a wicked deal,

Kegan

I just bought this from this guy (macman812)on eBay. He has one left. He came highly recommended from the Avid forums. I'm running both Avid and FCP on it with The AJA HD box. HD and SD both run smoothly. Full warranty and Apple care is available. Including extras. With 200.00 rebate from MSN. -Deal can't be beat.
Be careful who you buy from on ebay--but this guy is reliable.

I looked at the new MBP and

1) couldn't stand the glossy screen! Too glossy for detailed work.
2) I need both a 400 and 800 firewire port.
3) extra usb is also very handy.

I looked around quite a bit and this was the best deal for a new one I could find.

oops guess you bought one--good deal!

Good Luck:2vrolijk_08:
