Why does Hollywood still make bad movies? + 10 worst of all time.

And now they're going to compound the issue by making another horrible CGI Hulk movie.

Embarrassing.

Yes tbh the next hulk movies looks worst than the first one which is very embarrassing and funny at the same time. I also read an article that they are pulling Jurassic Park IV finally together.. so that one will suck too.

Did anyone mention Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!!!! Why? If you where set on making a bad movie, why don't just make a good bad movie. Biggest disappointment in quite some time.

Yes, and it's also an answer to the question the thread poses. Despite this, it's still managed to make over 300 million worldwide (150 million in the states) over its opening weekend.

Sometimes, bad films still make bank.

It's really unfortunate though. The industry shouldn't be run by businessmen. Period.

But alas, it will never change. Those who have money, have power, and businessmen have money...

You obviously do not understand capitalism... Hollywood (the American movie making industry) manages to produce good to decadent profits every year, so those businessmen must be balancing things out pretty well...

I think the article posted by seunosewa is pretty interesting as it points more at directors and producers than the businessmen at the distributors (Exec Prod). A pro writer slaves over a script for a year or more, a director is attached and he rewrites the whole thing in two weeks? How could that possibly work? If its the fault of the Exec Prod is that he/she did not impress upon the director that the script is the script, and if the director does not like it than this is not the project for them.

Wouldn't it be great if the film critics actually contacted the screenwriter and talked to them a bit about the project before leveling the finger at them for a poor film? Wouldn't it be great if actors walked away from a project because 50% of the script was rewritten after the deal was signed? (Changing the script could be considered 'breach of contract' if the script's version is specified in the actor's contract.)

I also think that's why Writer-Producer-Director people do so well, because they understand all facets of a project and they know it all starts with writing. It takes M. Knight more than two years to produce a film, how much of that is writing? Half or more, I'll wager...

I know movies are made to make money, But how can one explain why Pluto Nash was given over a 100 million to get made? They had to know. They had to.

That movie went through development hell and took 2 years to finish...that 100million was to complete the film not the budget they received outright. Odds are they had put so much money into it that they didn't want to give up on the investment. Felt like loosing 100% and not releasing was worse than throwing more dough at it and getting it out there.

You can add Hulk and Jurassic Park 3 to that list as well

Hulk wasn't not bad, we just got too much of what we didn't want. It was nice to try to make a "real" story but we don't need tons of back story, we didn't need it in the comic so why do we need it now? We wanted less "Banner feels emo" more "Hulk Smash". I hear part 2 got it right. You want a bad film try Punisher. A movie that adds up to being a basic action film, yet with million dollar CGI and special effects no one could make that? I don't get it. And why Thomas Jane? He was okay but not great. The new guy looks like he'll kick some butt. Maybe warzone will be better. Also Bulletproof Monk was very questionable. More martial arts, less CGI and less actors who don't know or can't pull off good martial arts. I love Ghost Rider, but maybe because I had such low expectations and it surpassed them. Blade three should've had Ghost Rider in it versus the "Night Stalkers" or whoever they were supposed to be. (Ghost Rider and Blade did spend some vamp hunting time together).

Because these writers are trying to think of a concept that will catch the eye of today's audience. This generation's humor is nothing short of horrid. Regardless of whether or not the directing or writing is bad if the theatrical trailer is intense and exciting to today's standard that is all they will need. It's all a scam to make more money in their pocket. I consider myself a good judge of movies, and a lot of today's movies don't make my cut for the classics. Hollywood is out to make a quick buck, and that's all there is to it. People are willing to pay cash to see horrible movies, whether it's good or bad. It's about socialization too. If you go to the movies with your friends knowing the movie you are about to see will be bad, it's enjoyable to bash. Regardless, I feel that watching a good movie is much more enjoyable.

I'll go out on a limb and say the new generation / genre of movies like Superbad, Pineapple Express, Hotrod or anything starting Seth Rogan and his buddies are simply horrible. These movies pretty much assumes everyone is either stupid or doesn't want to think when they watch a film for a couple of hours. They all have the same formula (slacker who screws everything up normally but pulls it all together in the end and gets the girl of his dreams) is as lame as some of the recent titles that have come out (Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist or Zack and Miri Make a Porno)... c'mon, it's just so pathetic now.

Humor is difficult to judge. Fact is people have different forms of humor. Some may place types of humor in two categories, low brow, and high brow. I don't think it's so clear cut because some people may place movies on different sides of the line.

I've heard people saying that Napoleon Dynamite is clever and quirky and fun, while others say it's stupid and low brow and you'd have to be an idiot to enjoy it.

To be honest, I never considered movies like superbad, and especially not nick and noras playlist, as low brow. I can see where you're coming from as there are some jokes that play with stupidity, and some with quirkiness and awkwardness, but let's be honest, this isn't Scary Movie/ Epic Movie/ etc... where all they do is play with stupidity to get a laugh.

When it comes to judging movies I find it pointless. Stating a film as absolutely terrible is difficult to judge because there will always be people that enjoy it.

I've never seen it, but some say that Ghost Rider was absolutely terrible and shouldn't have been made. However, I have some friends that consider ghost rider to be awesome.

I find Transformers to be one of the biggest crapshoots and terribly directed/filmed/written/everything. The only good thing out of it was Megan Fox. However it made millions, it's getting a sequal, and I know countless people that absolutely love it.

It's just the way it is... and to be honest, it frustrates me when people make lists of best or worse movies...

Jon:

I agree with you... art, whether it's film or paint on a canvas, is as subjective as the person who is viewing it. I find a lot of film nowadays to be rather boring, unimaginative and rather dumbed down but, hey, that's my take on it. Doesn't mean someone else thinks the opposite and thinks my two cents is worth absolutely nothing.

The great thing about art is that is allows people to discuss and communicate ideas, theories and viewpoints. If a film has people talking, then it's done it's job, right?

I'm actually not even anti-Seth Rogan either (he is Canadian after all lol), I just think he's much more capable of doing better work than what he's done in the past few films. But, again, that's my take on it and maybe others think he's perfect in the work he's done.

There was an interesting thread about the top 20 (or 25) documentaries of all time. It gets people talking and discussing, which is always a good thing. Agreeing to disagree isn't such a bad thing either, as long as the dialogue is civil, intelligent and respectful.

Maybe I'm just jealous that movies are being put out that I find low brow because my ideas haven't come to light yet. I'm a sucker for a well written film and I'm just finding they are few and far between now... again, that's just me.

This post bothers me on so many different levels.

Then this follow-up clubs me over the head with a pillow case filled with rusty doorknobs.

You think Superbad was a badly written movie?

--------------

OP listed: Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift as a bad movie. Well, it's certainly no Shawshank Redemption but I can't say that it's a "bad" movie. There was plenty of character arc, featured some nice Cinematography and production design and was directed with more competence than most of us could produce.

Again, it's no Oscar Winning Feature Film, I don't think it's "bad" though.

At this point, I would rather make a movie that's as "bad" as Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift or Superbad than sit around trying to come up with the next Academy Award Winner.

hollywood doesnt make good movies.
