Rating your own film

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had any problem with rating their own film here. As soon as I explained the voting/rating process to crew, friends, and family, the majority of the responses I got were, "so you are going to give yours a 10 obviously!" That way I'd surely bring up my score... in a purely competitive sense. And if I DIDN'T rate mine a ten, then I'd surely be missing out on the perfect score that everyone would give themselves, therefore putting me at a unjustified disadvantage simply because I didn't think it was right to rate my own film.

However, I just seem to have a problem with the whole concept of either approach... if I avoid it, I'm competitively disadvantaged, if I give it a 10 then I can't sleep at night. So I was just wondering what everyone else's opinion is on this matter?

Btw... I wound up showing a couple films to a non-DvxUser ...non-film person and had them rate each one 1-10 without any knowledge of which one was mine. Then I took their unknowing score on my film and rated mine with it.

P.S.- I just wanted to add, while I'm posting in the main section where everyone gets to see, these films in these fests just keep getting better and better. I've been watching since ZombieFest and I can't even explain how great the selection of films are this time around-- its astounding. I just want to congratulate everyone who is participating and let everyone know that I'm enjoying all the films! Great work!:thumbup:

I will not rate my film. First of all, I watched almost all of entries, and I doubt my entry will get in first 10 (or 8 or whatever). Next, maybe this supossed to be a rule-''No rating your own film'', so we're all equal at this.

At any rate, getting some bonus points will not get me any use or satisfaction-I fulfilled my mission, did the idea in 2 weeks, and the film got approved. By comparing it to the other ones, I can see myself in future getting some progress (after all, it IS my first movie).

I haven't gotten a chance to finish all of the films yet, but as soon as I get back on there downloading them I'll make sure to check yours out Mile! I agree that if at all possible, there should be some block on a user's ability to vote for their own movie. But then it would become difficult because what if the film has 3 or 4 DvxUser members who worked on the film, then there would still be those other crew members that could do just the same without any block on their voting ability. It would wind up something like a high school talent contest where they have the "popular choice vote"-- ya know... where the winner is the one who gets the most money put in their little box-- and then their parents, aunts, grandparents, cousins, distant 3rd nephew twice removed all come and put $100 in each to ensure the kid wins. Just a thought, I just bring this all up for discussion, I have faith that no one would actually do any of this just to win-- I think the best films truly speak for themselves...so it is probably a non issue anyway...just an interesting question to bring up.

If you were up for a Oscar would you not vote for yourself?

Haha, thats a far more efficient way of putting the question. Though, I think its a little different in this case... because its not a absolute vote... its a 1-10 rating. So that would be like giving your own film 10 stars and giving every other film 1 star. That would be ridiculously evil. :(

In my case, I think I rated each film well, rate them reasonably well. Goodluck to everyone. Cheers!

Some people think they should give them self a 10 in order to balance out with all the other films who will get a 10 from their respective filmmakers.

With the rating system we have in place now, there is no advantage/disadvantage to either rate or not rate your own film a 10. Because we employ an average of total votes cast on a film by film basis, the overall score is a fair representation of all those who voted for that film.

Remember it is not a ranking of films, you don't give a film a 5 because it was slightly worse than a film you gave a 6 or slightly better than a film you gave 4. Rather you give it a 5 because it is in the middle between the best film you ever saw (can't be improved) and the worst film you ever saw (can't be any worse).

If you give your film a 10, but it is really only a 5, you won't sway the overall average significantly because the rest of the users who vote for you film will generally vote between 4 and 6 - because this is the true representation of this film. When these are all averaged out, even with your self provided 10, it has little to no impact on the overall average.

We ran a tremendous amount of numbers when we first built this rating system and saw this to be the case, then throughout TimeFest we watched this play out in real time.

So whether you think you should or should not give your self a 10 is your own matter. I would say its better to view your film as objectively as possible and rate your film where you would rate it if someone else made that film.

Awesome, thats exactly what I was hoping to do with getting another person's objective rating on my own film instead of rating it myself. And good work on the voting/rating system...it would appear that you guys have really put a lot of time and effort into making sure that the system can't be cheated or slanted whatsoever- very professional. Thanks again for clearing that up-- I guess the question I raised has been decidedly answered and become quite moot!

I rated my own film. But I could not give it a 10, or a 9, or an 8 for that matter because it had mistakes. I have to be real with myself. only 2 films got 10's from me and both were MUCH better than mine.

When I cheat, in anything, I definitely don't feel I deserve the earnings.

In this case, If I gave myself a 10, and my film wasn't worth that, I would feel I'm cheating.

My film had few mistakes, and the story could've been better.

I gave myself a 7 :)

Unless you rate your film completely objectively then you are wasting your time. The system is set up using averages which means the final outcome is based on the average score your film received based on all votes it received, independent of the other films votes.

So if you give yourself a 10, but everyone else gave you between a 2 and 4, then the final outcome will be around a 3.

I point this out because there are those who believe giving themselves a 10 and everyone else a 1 will improve their place in the standings, but this is not the case.

In addition, there has been the question (for many past fests) of whether or not to vote for your own entry. And one argument that has been passed around is that you need to in order to counteract the other filmmakers who will give themselves a 10, but as I've just explained this will not make any difference.

Another argument supplied in favor for voting on your own entry is the example of if you were in the running for an oscar, or running for president, you would surely vote for yourself. But that is a comparison of apples and oranges, because those votes are based on a total count of votes for a particular entry, where we are tallying an average vote for a specific entry.

We used to do the "pick a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place entry" type of voting, and that is more like the oscar or president vote. But because we now rate each film independently that argument doesn't really work.

BUt again, if you feel strongly that you need/want to vote for your own, go ahead. It won't sway the vote (won't push it up or down beyond the overall consensus). But if you choose not to vote it won't negatively affect you (won't pull you down below the overall consensus).

If you do vote for your own film, I would recommend that you try to view it as objectively as possible and rate it the way you would rate it if someone else had made it.

Giving yourself a 10, when it's not deserved, is just dishonest. I know some folks may feel they "have" to do it, but I'd rather not see us engage in a "race to the bottom"; it'd be better and more community-oriented to rate each film fairly (including one's own.)

This is why in past Festivals I have never rated my own film. The only time I did this was last fest when I was told I pretty much had to.

This Fest I am going by all the comments I've received and trying to rate CFTFB by those results. It's impossible to rate your own work objectively. IMHO.

Needless to say, I'm still moving the rating around this Fest and it will NOT land on 10 stars.
