Where did Corrado go?

Ok, fair enough but it is more educational when you have several hundred people chiming in with all sorts of questions. He really doesn't get much of that on his new blog anymore.

Peace :)

Sorry, man. Jack had second thoughts about his verbage, and the following posts didn't make sense as a result.

Points he made were made in my original post anyways. I agree... it's good when there is a large base of folks to be able to provide feedback for one's work... Though, not everyone seems to share that same opinion.

Later,
Jason

I agree, however I have witnessed a couple times where people are cheap about it. Granted the mods have a huge job to do and they cant be super cops for every post on every thread. But I can see how someone who has actually finished a feature film might feel a little perturbed by people with little to no filmmaking experience ( such as myself ) telling them how to make a film or cut a trailer for it. Personally it is a fear of mine when I post my thoughts on someone else's work that they are going to think... Who the F is this kid? I just don't feel right giving people advice on their films when I have barely accomplished a handful of shorts myself.

That all being said, I love DVXUSER and I want to hear people's opinions of my work good and bad. I know I am not the only one either.

So let's all grab a hoegarden and watch THE FALL (the movie)...because it's bad ass.

haHAHa I kid because I love.

for what it's worth, your feedback on my trailer was very useful, adam.

Thanks,
That post was one that I was worried about to be honest. I know I shouldn't be, because ultimately this place is full of good people who can respect each other's opinion. I am getting more comfortable, this plays kind of grows on you, it's strange.

There was drama and disagreements and wrong doing from people on both sides of this issue, as I have already stated. With Adam commenting that he no longer wished to have anything to do with the forum,

Jason,

My thoughts regarding DVXUser:

1. The people are great.
2. The sense of community is probably the best of anywhere on the net.
3. The site is useful and well organized.
4. The moderators are prone to petty censorship (and no, I'm not talking about my signature)
5. Equality is enforced through a democratization of the threads where it probably shouldn't be.
6. I don't feel keen on the leadership here at all. Lot's of infighting and petty squabbles.

In short, Zak Forsman had one of the best ideas I had ever heard: the making of the prominent feature threads stickies.

Remember this thing originally revolved around the Corrado sticky situation.

What you guys should've done is this:

Make Corrado, Prodigi, Rice, and Forsman's thread stickies. These are the "learn from the people that have actually done it" sections. They deserved prominence. They deserved to be separated from all the other stuff. Give the thread holders limited mod ability in their own threads to be able to police them from heckling in the form of "constructive criticism".

It works.

On my blog, I have the power to mod and have never used it. I've posted every comment, good or bad. But people don't get too nasty since they know I have the power to mod.

That would really spruce this place up. A dedicated learn from the masters section.

That would be pretty sweet, I hope they make that happen and I'm sure traffic would go up by 20-30% because of it.

A dedicated learn from the masters section.

Adam - with all due respect, one completed, unreleased feature does not a 'master' make.

I suppose I could call myself a 'master' of music/audio recording and mixing, but I'm really reluctant to do so. And I've been making a very good living at it for many, many award-winning years.

Your contributions here at DVXUser have been beyond measure, but if I may be forgiven for saying so, I feel you sometimes would be better served by checking just a bit larger measure of your ego at the door. As one example, you used the phrase "this is wisdom" just a few too many times for my taste.

I remember when I was a few successful years into my music career thinking I was pretty damn hot sh*t. Later, as I gained more and more expertise, I realized that I wasn't actually good enough yet to rationally support that kind of self-image. That was a very long time ago, and I still hold to that view. I know I always will, because that's what self-motivates growth and improvement. I'd be willing to bet that most true 'masters' feel the same way about themselves. They probably would never have achieved mastery if they hadn't.

Ok...off the ol' soap box now...

---------------------

I would like to add that in my humble opinion your latest trailer is vastly, vastly better than the first, and I am still rooting with all my might for "Corrado" to be a huge success for you and your cast and crew.

I hope you take my comments above the dotted line in the constructive spirit in which they were intended.

=T With the blog still being abrasive toward the community in very recent posts it probably should have been taken down.

No offense at all to Adam, but as far as an intellectual property I wonder how far Corrado's publicity got with DVXuser's help...

let me clarify, the idea I suggested was for a new "by invitation only" sub-section of case studies by filmmakers who had successfully distributed their film so that the people here could learn equally from their missteps and masterstrokes. the thought was to reach out to filmmakers like Hunter Weeks (10 MPH), Lance Weiler (Head Trauma) and Arin Crumley (Four Eyed Monsters) as well as proven DVXusers like Brandon Rice, Adamo, Prodigi.....

let me offer one more thought on this whole Corrado thread debacle... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ9uCiPBIWc

Oy vey. You win.

I used master for lack of a better term. (journeyman? Experienced? I dunno) And I can count on the fingers of one hand those who have one "uncompleted, unreleased feature" around here. Especially one that was written, directed, produced, and edited by the same person. Not Prodigi, Forsman, Rice, or any others did that. That's not ego, that's a fact.

And, it looks like I'm going to get a small theatrical run to boot.

This is a good point and one that I will readily answer, since I looked for the answer myself:

****My Experience Only****

1. As far as general buzz on the internet went, DVXUser went a long way to contributing to that buzz. This includes page views, comments, reader awareness of the film, etc. It could not have been done without DVX.

2. The real world is a different story. None of the distributors know about DVX, and no one cares. I tried several times to leverage the popularity of my thread into some sort of sales tool to show how popular my movie was. I mentioned DVX, my page views, my blog views, and all this stuff to these people in meetings and all I got were polite smiles.

Finally, I stopped mentioning DVX or even my own blog altogether as it was wasted time, and was not advancing the sale of the movie. And this was from a thread with 180,000+ page views.

So in case anyone is wondering the synopsis is thus:

1. Will DVX User generate buzz on your film? Absolutely.
2. Will it matter when you are trying to sell it? Absolutely not.

Conclusion: creating a diary is a means of helping fellow filmmakers. DVX's sphere of influence outside the internet filmmaking community is non-existent.

I would say that depends on the context. As far as pulling weight with distributors, etc... probably, you are right (for now ) But, there are many other ways to "sell" your film. Zak, I believe, is extremely focused on the concept of marketing and selling your film through "non-traditional" methods. Moving forward the indy community should really focus strongly on alternative ways of selling/marketing ones work. Self-distribution, etc. In that context, I believe the buzz, hype, interest, whatever created here on dvxuser can create quite a large potential audience for the indy filmmaker that can translate into direct sales and further word of mouth sales.

From there, the market may be more friendly when one tries to shop their film around to studios, etc.

my pence... but I'm certainly no expert on that. I've got one filmi sitting on a shelf :)

later,
Jason
