Upgrade EX1 firmware to 1.11

I have read some information on various thread and forums about upgrading the EX1 firmware to 1.11 but never a thread dedicated to EX1 firmware upgrade.

1. As a user, can we upgrade our own EX1 to 1.11? If not, where and how much will it cost us to send in our camera for upgrade and how long will it take?

2. Has anyone actually upgrade the firmware to 1.11 and got it working without any problems? If so, what are the steps?

3. What are some of the fixes or enhances of firmware 1.11? Will it fix the battery drainage problem e.g.?

1. Yes, we can upgrade our cameras. But it is not officially supported by Sony. At least in the US. If you send it in, I believe the cost is $100. How long it takes depends on the center you send it to, and their workload. I have heard 30 days in some places, less in others.

2. Yes. I did the upgrade and got it working properly with no headaches. Other than me being a moron and not realizing which USB port to use!

3. Apparently autofocus is better/faster, more shutter speeds or something, battery drain fix, etc. The ONLY reason I was interested was so that I could use the KxS memory card solution instead of the SxS cards. To me, that is the biggest selling point of the upgrade.

Thanks foro the response.

Do you have any instruction step by step on how to update the firmware and where to download the firmware?

A word of caution: Sony claims that doing the firmware update yourself will void your warranty. And given the tempermental nature of the EX1, you will probably need to have some minor flaw corrected at a Sony service center within your first year of ownership. We have two; one of which has been to Sony twice for repair of known flaws.

I've heard mixed responses from Sony on this. It certainly depends on who you talk to.
New cameras are coming through with 1.11.

consolidate all those issues that you want Sony to fix and sent the cam in for fixing. Put a note in the box with the list of item you want them fix. last item should be 'firmware upgrade'. Hopefully a kind soul at service center will do it for you FOC

The battery drain problem is NOT fixed by a firmware upgrade. It requires replacement circuit boards. Here in the UK my Sony Professional dealer was allowed to apply the firmware upgrade but was NOT allowed to apply the battery drain fix. Sony insist (at least in the UK) that the camera has to go back to them for the circuit board replacement.

Carefully read the instructions.

If let's say I want Sony to fix it, what number should I call? One more thing, how long is the warranty on the EX1 and where do I find that out?

Can you post the steps on how to upgrade? I think that we would all appreciate it. :)

I haven't updated... for those that have, do you really feel the autofocus is quicker/better? I need to learn my manual focusing techniques better, but there are times I use autofocus and I'm not happy with the response. I'm used to my still photography where it snaps to critical focus quickly. Also, I think when using the Century Fisheye you can't use manual focus, so I must rely on the slow Sony autofocus and it's not always acceptable to me. But man, when it's on, whew boy, it's ON! This lens is razor!

There is also a few links on my KxS page below (one the same as that referenced thread).
