HMC 150 footage converted by toast 9 help?

Hello,

Ok so I downloaded some footage from a member on this site which posted some raw HMC150 files and started playing with them a bit. I own toast 9.. The person who posted the raw files posted 31clips... Some of the clips compressed perfect but some looked jumpy and some the audio was not in sync with the clip. Based on these results there is no way on hell I am buying this camera, unless I am doing something wrong... I see lots of people here saying they use toast 9 to convert it to work in FCP and they get great results. What am I doing wrong?

It can help if you tell us what YOU are doing when converting. I have played with a few clips in Toast 9 as well and have not had any problems. I just convert it to DVCHDPRO and it works fine.
 
I read on another forum to do this:


The ideal way to do this is to take the .mts files from your AVCHD camera, add them to the Convert section of Toast and select Video Files. Then select QuickTime movie and under video settings and select Settings. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Under size select the size of your file (most likely 1920*1080 HD). Then under Sound settings select Linear PCM.

Why is this a bad idea? Well, for some reason QuickTime conversion limits converting into AIC at any quality higher than "Medium" and I have not found a way to change that. The better option is to use Voltaic. Google it, it produces much better looking (aka higher bitrate) files that are Final Cut ready.

I really just let it auto set... Thats why I am asking what do you guys (who have made it work) use? Thanks
 
Here is an example of what I am talking about. I have tried to compress this in many different ways and the same thing keeps happening.

Notice you hear the sound of the truck passing way after the truck has already passed and the clip freezes but sound keeps going. Any clue why this happens?

P.S. The original avchd clip does not do this but after run through toast it happens.... This clip was downoaded from a person on this forum(shrigg) he posted clips for people to test.

You could just use 1080i and then FC can import it itself no problem. Is it important to you to use 1080/720P?
 
No I wouldn't mind capturing in 1080i but I would really like to use progressive to get away from that interlaced stuff... So basicly there is no way (as of right now) to get any other footage other than 1080i into FCP without having problems? Not even toast will work?
 
ive been using toast to transcode to dvcprohd no problems so far. i shoot in 720/24p mode and transcode to dvcprohd 720 with the audio set to PCM 48k 16bit.
 
Can anyone explain what happens on that clip above??

Can anyone provide me with a short ACVHD file so that i can test? One that involes someone talking so I can see if it syncs.... Thanks...
 
sorry for this dub question im a beginner and im getting the hmc150 this weekend. Ive downloaded toast 9 and i dont understand how im supposed to get my footage from the camera onto the program. Do i just plug it up and something will pop up? i have a mac book. thanks ad sorry again.
