I'm STUCK directing a HORRIBLE movie! advice?

That is funny you say that, because he did cast 2 comedians. What I think I will do is shoot Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, cut a quick trailer then have an epiphany. Plus I just got moved from the DVX to the HVX and I still don't know the camera fully yet. everything on this project just smells bad.

No man... things happen for a reason... this might be your best, you never know. Even if it doesn't end up being your best it could teach you heaps of stuff you will need to know anyway.

Very true. I talked with my wife and my AD last night and I think I am just going to do it, get it over with and move on to my next feature. But if he does not come up with the money we need to rent the clubs and the gym we can not go on. I spent a lot already.

Tell him you need a Producer. As a Director you should be paid, not paying.

I will tell him that at lunch. I am not 100% totally clear on what a producer/executive producer does, But I know it has something to do with financing and not coming on set and jumping on myspace. If he was not my boss, thus allowing me to feed my babies it would be a no go. even no-budget films cost money. I am sitting down with him today. Thanks

The short answer is: the executive producer secures the financing/money, the producer spends it.

Thanks. I am now the producer/exective producer/director

This is YOUR movie... he wrote the script, and a bad one... you are doing WELL over 50% of the work... just hire Mr.T and have him intimidate your boss for you.

But seriously: Good luck on the meeting. Be polite but never lose track of the fact or stop sounding like you are more responsible for this movie than he is. This will be YOURS much more than HIS. And that is the reality... you can't change that, he can't change that... unless he does/provides more so that you can do/provide less.

What an awkward situation!

What about offering, as director, to do an uncredited rewrite. Just do your best to improve it in a draft. You don't have to put your name on it as writer, but maybe you can elevate it.

As someone mentioned, it sounds like your movie anyhow. If you're putting your money into it (and he isn't). Then he really doesn't have any say. He might be actually a bit impressed if you are frank with him, and you say you're realizing the script has a lot of problems.

This will work

This will work

This is an easy one.

1. Do up a complete budget
2. Hand it to him
3. Listen to him say "It's gonna cost that much?!"
4. Pretend to be enthusiastic about the film as he says "I'm real sorry, but we can't get the budget - film scrapped".

Yes, I like this and think it will work ...and you're still the hero.

i'm somewhat confused. is this his movie or is this your movie? because if it is his movie, he should be the one to secure financing. what exactly is the financial arrangement for this project?

okay. Now we are almost done this movie. And it is the just not gonna be good. I tried to get into it, I did, But I couldn't. It is so bad I am gonna post some stuff so we can all have a good laugh. I put ZERO effort into it. Shooting the sex scenes were a lot of fun though. I wish you guys could see this thing.

It sounds as if you are not an experienced director. Didn't Rodriguez say that we each have 13 or 14 bad movies in us before we have a clue as to what we are doing and begin to make good movies?

I would just go through the motions with enough conviction to convince your boss that you are trying your best. If the script sucks, unless he will let you deviate from script and improv a bit, you know the end product is going to suck so why not just get through it and move on?

Dan

good point. We only have two more days left. I am far from being a good director right now. The good thing about this film is that I used it to learn the HVX. I just look at it as practice.

I would not recommend you to do this. I think its just wrong. If this project sucks so bad, I would just finish it then move on, but no need to ridicule the guy for your and our entertainment. It just shows bad character on your part, even though you may be a good person and mean no harm. If your intention was to post the clips to get some good constructive criticism to then go back and have him learn from, then find, but if its just to make someone look bad, then its a bad judgment.
