DVX100B image is suddenly jerking to the side

I know some other people experienced this in the past.

All of a sudden when using my DVX100B, the image jerks to the side. It does it in a jerky jumping motion. I was hoping it was just the LCD screen, but after capturing footage, it is showing up prominently in the video.

Can anyone else share with me what happened when they had this problem? Did you have to have it repaired? What kind of cost was the repair?

Another thing is I live in the middle of nowhere. I'm not sure where the closest panasonic repair center would be, or do you just mail in the camera to be worked on regardless of where you are at?

Thanks

What Barry suggested.

Also, what worked for me was shooting in squeeze mode (DVX100b). Once I started shooting in squeeze mode, there has been no more "jerky" images. Give it a try and let us know if it worked for you.

All the best,

It happens whether it's stationary on a tripod or hand held.

I almost always shoot in squeeze mode, so it was already in squeeze mode when this started happening.

I talked to someone at the repair center and they say I should send it in. Of course, the minimum bill is 130.00 - He said he hasn't really heard of something like this before.

Anyone else have any similar problem? I'm curious as to how much of a repair charge I'm going to get hit with.

hey i shoot lots of stuff in 4:3 non squeeze and i've never had a problem did you buy your camera used or did you damage it somehow?

I did buy it used, but have used it a lot since I got it, so it's not a situation where I just got it and it's suddenly doing this. It's been used a lot.

And no, I didn't do anything to damage it whatsoever. I handle it with kid gloves. I just turned it on one day and it was doing it. Simple as that. After the first time, I turned the camera off and back on and it was fine for the rest of the day. however, the next time i used it, as soon as I turned it on it was jerking to the side again and turning it off and on did not help and it did it for the rest of the day.

Okay, here's the latest.

Barry, since you mentioned the OIS should be off if used on a tripod, i decided to try shutting off the OIS when the picture started jerking again.

So, the picture began jerking. I watched for about 60 seconds and it did it very consistently during the duration. Then I shut the OIS off and the jerking immediately stopped. I watched for 60 seconds and it did not jerk one time during the duration. So then I turned the OIS back on and once again, it immediately started jerking.

I did this over a few times just to be sure the the results were consistent everytime. When I turn the OIS on, the image jerks all over the place. When I turn it off, it's fine.

Any ideas as to what this means?

something must be wrong with your image stabilizer try shooting handheld with ois on and moving your camera quite a bit see if it still jerks

Sounds like you are going about this thoughtfully and logically.
If you are doing this test with the camera mounted on a tripod and NOT panning the camera, ....i.e. hands completely off .....and the image becomes unstable when OIS is switched ON? , then your OIS gyro circuit has got to be defective. It is sensing and compensating for movement that does not exist.
It is normal to get a jerking motion if attempting a tripod mounted pan with OIS ON... but if there is no movement in a completely stabilized camera then there is no movement to correct, i.e. there should be no difference in the image whatsoever with OIS ON or OFF---unless the OIS circuit is faulty.
Sounds like it is time to service that thang!

Yep GCO, that's the situation.

If I set the camera on something, so it is absolutely stable and not being moved whatsoever, the image jerks to the left very steadily and it's not slight, it's pretty significant. The SECOND i turn the OIS off, it stops jerking. The SECOND i turn it back on it starts jerking again.

Yeah, i'll have to send it in. Fortunately, I can still use it in the meantime, i just have to keep the OIS off.

I have never used the OIS...

On a SAME but "DIFFERENT" note... my auto mechanic tells me I should replace the ABS control module on my wifes car. It registers 1000 MPH while the car is sitting still... What brought this to light is the fact that the car was jerking to the right when she applied the brakes...

It appears that servo(type) control circuits go bad in everything...

Just to put a finishing note on this thread - I sent the camera into the repair place and it cost about 475 bucks to fix. Could have been worse I suppose.
