HPX170 HD-SDI Crops: Apple ProRes HQ 422

They're sections out of the 720p. Not blown up or anything, just pulled two elements that showed the obvious resolution bump.

Expand them if you can't see.

1st is P2, 2nd is SDI. Not surprising given the 720p's prefilter. Another reason why I prefer 1080p over 720p on the HVX/HPX170.

Indeed it is. I was actually a tad bit surprised to actually 'see' it right off. I would like to say that it's negligible but when I think about how much "sharper" or resolute the A1 is and that was considered negligible, I kind of want this.

Going to try 1080 but I expect to see even less of difference.

Your 1080 DVCPRO-HD should look ever so slightly sharper than your 720p SDI grabs.

People who say there is no difference between the 720 and 1080 just aren't lookin' at the same thing I am... :)

Oh I meant 1080 through HD-SDI. I know for a fact that the 1080 DVCproHD is the better way to go when you have the card space. I'm going to grab a long HD-SDI cable and head outside as soon as I finish a chunk of tapes.

Heres the thing I don't understand, though:

Why does the A1's 1080p look more resolute than the HVX/HPX's 1080p if it's only a few lines more?

1280x1080 vs 1440x1080

And, if that's the reason, why am I not expecting some A1 flavor or just SLIGHTLY better 1080 out of the HPX's SDI?

I already know not to expect it, I still can't figure out why.

I still don't agree with the assertion that the A1 looks all that sharper. In my HVX vs. A1 test, I saw maybe, at most, a 5% difference.

But, assuming that you did want to think of it as being sharper, the question is 1080i or 1080p; in 1080p mode they're very comparable. In 1080i mode the A1 will be sharper because it's dealing with 1080 vertical pixels, vs. the HVX's 810 lines.

Fair enough. I won't be comparing an A1 but I will try to do a quick 1080 vs HD-SDI 1080, 1080 > 720 vs HD-SDI 720 as well.

I still like the little bit of resolution as it all counts, that's just my personal thought.

It was my understanding that the hvx isn't even 1280x1080, the format is. I always thought of it as going from it's 960x540 chips to 1280x1080 and then shifting again to 1920x1080 a two step process. Where as the xha1 goes from 1440x1080 to 1920x1080, one step, and a smaller step at that. I don't know about only a 5% difference but pretty much everyone I know thinks the a1 is shaper at any frame rate than the hvx at 1080, and thats without telling them which is which. Color always goes to the panasonic, which is usually more important to clients anyways, but we all knew that.

I always wished the new chips in the 200a, 170, and 150 were a native 1280x1080.

I third on that sice i own both cams. Colr certainly goes to pany but res goes to canon. the a1 is a good mix of hvx and the ex1. This is why i've decided to keep my other a1 and hv 20.

Wait so does SDI bypass the compression and prefiltering all together?

I need some clarification im new to HD SDI
