HVX 200 and New Mac Book Pro

I'm new to filmmaking, have recently purchases an hvx 200, and am looking into an external monitor to take out with me. I've done research on various monitors (Neb, tv logic, etc) and am wondering if anyone has considered using the new Macbook Pro 15" as their external monitor out in the field. I will be shooting HD and I'm going to be shooting out of the country and the less gear I have the better, however, I don't want to sacrifice an entire shoot (poor contrast, excessive highlights and whatnot) because I want less gear to carry.
Like I said, I'm totally new to filmmaking, I have just started playing around with my 200 and have only read that relying on the hvx lcd screen is unreliable. So I definately know I need an external monitor. I really need some good advice on what to do.

I would like to buy the new mac book pro and use it as both my external monitor and editing computer. Once I finish shooting I will buy the mac monitor high def screen but am I screwing myself by not purchasing one of the above mentioned external monitors for my shoot??
Thanks.

With onLocation CS4 Mac, you can get a pretty good utility for monitoring to the MBP.

However, it won't work with anything pN, because that doesn't stream out FW.

However, the price of OL, which isn't sold separately, will equal the price of a Marshall, etc.

Might looked at Scopebox or HD Monitor as alternative solutions.

Yes, as is Scopebox. I answered my own question. Now with either of these allow me to control my focus better. I read on one of these forums that determing focus is really challanging with the hvx 200 lcd screen. With these two software programs help me with that?

If you are going to be editing in Final Cut Studio, then you could use the capture now window as a monitor at no extra cost for additional software. Capturing into Final Cut has the additional benefit of allowing you to strip out all redundant frames on the fly, which is the equivalent of capturing only the 24PN frames. One tip if you decide to try this, expand the video window in the log and capture window before you start monitoring your video stream--this creates a relatively large image for monitoring. For some reason the log and capture window defaults (or at least it did before FCP6) to a small video window, and it can't be enlarged after you begin monitoring. FCP's log and capture window also has live video scopes, which I believe will work with DVCPro HD (they do not work live with HDV).

I hope I am remembering all of this correctly, as I have been recording to P2 cards for some time, and have not recorded direct to disk in a while.

I think that I confused everyone. I'm actually recording to a firestore100 but I want to be able to make sure the picture that I'm filming is being recorded properly. Lighting good and what not. I don't want to use the hvx200 lcd screen because I heard its not reliable. Would it be possible for me to record on a firestore and use a macbook pro as an external monitor as opposed to a Tvlogic monitor or other type of monitor.

you'll need an actual video monitor if you're going to use the firestore.

you will have to connect the monitor with component cables from the HVX.

And the D4 connector on the HVX is the worst video monitor connector is the history of video. It is loose and sloppy and if you jiggle it, it drops the signal.
