the long and short is - panasonic US (as well as spec comm) is fixing it for free.
got my email from panasonic yesterday saying i will be getting an rma (shipping paid both ways by panasonic) via email in the next few days. they say its a 1-2 day benchtime.
even though my wobble hasnt caused any issues, im going to go ahead and let them fix it.
They will be fixed on the assembly line. Unless a dealer has unsold 170s from the first batch delivered, all new 170s will ship fixed. Panasonic stopped production and shipping to address this issue and it is reportedly solved as far as new cameras that will be in the next batch shipped.
At this point, other than a couple of days of inconvenience for us early adopters, I would say it is handled.
as a possessor of a very slightly wobble-afflicted 170. id have to agree with dan. ive yet to see a problem in my footage (even with a 35mm adapter and follow focus), but ive been sent my preliminary return info from panasonic and im going to let them fix it just in case.
aside from all of this, the image quality of the 170 is soooo much worth this slight speed-bump!
cheers to panasonic (and spec comm) for stopping production and making things right
