Idiot newbie question - DVCProHD the only format choice?

Hi. :)

Idiotic question I know, and I think I already know the answer ('no') but I thought I'd ask it anyway.

I've been tasked with recording a concert tomorrow with an HVX200 - it has two P2 cards (thank god) because I think I'll have to hotswap at least once or twice as they want a contiguous 3 hour recording! Time to bring the laptop in...

While I'm not unfamiliar with shooting, ingesting and encoding video, I've never used or ingested stuff direct from one of these cameras before. Somewhat bizarrely, I'm disappointed by its lack of compression options - it's DVCProHD or nothing at all.

At this rate, I'm going to have to go with 576i or be prepared to do five or six hotswaps if I record in 720p (both the bloke I'm doing this for and myself were looking forward to getting a 720p recording out of this). 576i/25p will give me 138minutes, 720p/25pn gives me 69. It's manageable, but not really ideal (especially when, aside from a quick test tomorrow before I do the recording, I don't have any hands on time except for the short period of time I have this evening, which is about to end). I'm going to have to get good at hotswapping and transferring across P2 contents very quickly!

(are there any pitfalls to avoid? I've already made a note to get the latest P2 drivers for my Windows laptop from the sixbullets site, and I may take some sample footage and one of the P2 cards home to familiarise myself with the ingest/formatting process if I can) - but is there anything else I need to bear in mind or remember when I'm doing this?

And, as my final question (and the one to which I think I already know the answer)... You can't select lossier / more compact modes of compression on the camera, can you? Am I right in thinking it's DVCHDPro and the various resolution options, and that's your lot?

Of course there's the MiniDV tape option, but 1) that means I'll still have issues because I don't think I can get any 180min tapes at such short notice and 2) it complete removes the hotswap ability anyway!

I have enough raw storage on my external drive to cope with a few hours of 720p footage, and I may end up doing it the painful way and hotswapping provided it works well - but I was hoping that there was some way to reduce the bitrate from the 100mbps the camera records at in order to save space (if I'm right in understanding it records at 100mbps). Can anybody with a clue either confirm my suspicions or point me in the right direction to help me get what I'm after?

Thanks in advance. Hope my first post on here after being a lurker for a while isn't met with the warm sensation of constant flames ;)

Will you be locked down in one spot or moving around? If the former, another option although I haven't tried it yet with my HPX170, is to use Adobe OnLocation. I've used it with other cams and aside from a slight lag in the display, it works great; shouldn't be a problem if you're locked down in one spot... No hot swapping of cards necessary and the footage is recorded directly to the hard drive (720p not 720pn). For piece of mind, I believe you can also simultaneously record to both the cards and the laptop...

Cheers,

If you want to shoot HD, than DVCPRO HD is your only option. But the camera shoots DVCVPRO 50 and DVCPRO 25 as well. DVCPRO 25 is DV...and DVCPRO 50 is higher end SD, like Digibeta.

Iiiinteresting, I wasn't aware of onLocation. And yep, I'm tied to one spot so that might work (I'll have the laptop with me anyway with an external HD so I'm going nowhere fast!)

Does it require FW800/400? I only have a mini Firewire port on my laptop but fortuitously it does have a PCMCIA slot, so I borrowed a P2 card to experiment with ingest and get up to speed. I'm sure there's a Firewire cable lying round though in my pigsty of a room though, so if onLocation works over FW400 I'll go and research it a bit more tonight :)
