Do you use unsharp mask on all video you shoot?

How many folks use some sharpening filter routinely?
What "sweet spot" for sharpening have you found?

I have seen some amazing results fron NIK sharpener in photoshop ($300 plugin, much better than unsharpen mask). The problem is for video you have to batch export every frame, import them into photoshop and then batch export and re import back to your nle. Takes a day or two for a 1 hour show but it looks SHARP. Much better than any sharpening tool that I have ever seen that comes with your nle.

I would love to see some NIK sharpener screen grabs/footage of before and after, if you could take the time.

Excuse my noobness here, but what is the benefit of sharpening the video image? I thought the general consensus was that Panasonic cameras have a softer image and that is what some people preferred.

You can now have both, the sharp Discovervy Channel look and the soft film look of 24p... I wish my hvx was as sharp as an EX-1 but I can get it close with some 3rd party software.

Are you happy with NIK? One of the problems with any artificial sharpening is the coarse plastic look.

Yes, you get a lot of that but thats what it is for. I can say I'm happier with NIK than any NLE sharpen tool. It's not for everyone but if your shooting something like flowers in macro it is sweet. I'd never use it for a 24p film or a short. It's not for everyone and by no means everything you shoot.

Unsharp-Mask was my secret weapon for a long time. Now I unsharp-mask only the eyes, or more often use a plugin that unsharp-masks only moving areas (and doesn't unsharp-mask skin-tones).

Ahh, the look from the movie 300. I really liked how they used it to make the eyes super sharp.
