ok so i shoot on a dvx100a, no 16:9. i want to see my footage on a 16:9 tv. the 4:3 shows up with the sides cropped. how can i get the image to be upconverted to 16:9 to fit the screen and not loose any resolution. i dont want to use the zoom mode on the tv for the footage to fit. I have instant Hd. can i use that? if anyone knows any other method i would love to know thanks!

In your NLE you could always crop your footage to 16:9. You'll lose some of the picture from the top and bottom of the frame, but at least that way it won't have to be stretched on the TV or have the sides cropped or anything

if you have final cut pro you can do this.
I converted a 4/3 image into 16/9 it takes some time to make the proportions right but not long at all. Open final cut pro. Enter the canvas, you might need to conform each clip seperately but just change the ratio through the scale slider I think, adjust till its stretched out. I didn't lose any resolution I thought it actually looked more full of an image.
Hope this helps,
Nick

The sides aren't cropped -- it's just that 16:9 is wider so there's nothing to fill the sides.

You can certainly crop the image and uprez it to 16:9, but when you do it, you're slicing off 25% of the image and working with the remaining 75%, so it will never be as high a resolution as it would be if it were shot by a native 16:9 camera. You won't "lose" resolution in the remaining part of the picture; you're just not working with as much.

But it won't look bad. As I say, it won't have as much resolution as native 16:9 or even if you had shot squeeze, but it'll be fine.
