My first try at Realflow..some digital blood hits

First time playing with realflow. I thought it might be cool to try and make some digital blood hits like the ones in action movie essentials.

First go around keep in mind these are full 3d. Made the fluid sim in realflow then exported to Cinema 4d for texture and render.

I rendered it out 60fps then slowed one of the clips down in AE.

Good stuff. It's more like a spray than hits though. The match move with the truck was really good too. Keep it coming!

Dang that is what I meant more like blood spray. Realflow is pretty freaking cool and it integrates in C4D pretty well.

thank you metro2307 and towerfan I appreciate the kind words.

Man, your really cranking stuff out.

I'd recommend watching 'Boondock Saints' for blood hit references. There is a scene midway where they fall through a ceiling and shoot a bunch of guys in slow motion.
It appears like 2 blood layers were used if it were done in 3D.

The first is a brief violent fine spray when the bullet first hits, followed by the gush out of the hole. The fine spray layer can be simple C4D particles with some blur in post. The gush layer has a consitency like oil or egg, not so much like water.

If you get a chance, pick it up and step through the frames. It's also a great movie.

Also, for one of your former road side tracking tests, it would be cool if you could replace the text with a crater in the road. Quite a bit more work though.

Keep them coming.

Kick ASS! Realflow, from what I have read, is not an easy app to get. Nice to see some good results. We finally have someone here we can hassle into giving us nice liquid sims. WOOT!!!

Trip, I would like to see those animations against a lighter background. I had a wee spot of trouble really seeing it. Even a white background would be good, or even better, composited against a photo.

Keep it up jack, the results thus far are very, very promising.

Thanks for the encouragement raptor and Matt :). I actually haven't seen Boondock Saints yet but want to. This gives me another reason why I should rent it!

Hey matt I will try and comp the blood with some picture or video. Sorry about the black background.

I tell you what I'm addicted to anything VFX!

I certainly will keep them coming :). You know me I rather learn then sleep. Anyways forgot to mention I'm working on some cooler looking matchmove test not just text on road!

Heres another from a different point of view. For this one I just made a really basic texture in Cinema similar to what Andrew did for all of his stock blood. That way one could really play with it and color correct it in AE.

I changed quite a bit of things in realflow just to experiment. I also rendered it HD out of Cinema this time around and put a white solid behind it so its easier to see but it is "pre-matted".

It's a bit hard to tell from that angle but I think the angle of dispersion is a bit high. Probably should be narrower and the mesh more stringy like. Maybe have the particles travel down a tube first at a higher speed.

You can import a tube mesh from C4D (triangulate it first before export) and use that as a deflector. Stick an emitter in it and away you go. But it depends on the look your going after I suppose.

That is a great idea Raptor! Didn't think of that.

Thought I would give AE a try at making blood since it communicates so well with C4D and you can connect trapcode particular to it.

So the blood here is "not" meant for realism its more like 300 style

//Edit: I was replying to the previous post (#12) while you were posting #13...

I don't like that one. It just looks like simple sphere particle effects.

Maybe up the particle count and use cubes or even better 4 point planes or triangles to keep the poly count down and use a lot of linear and motion blur in post. If it's a long shot you might be okay.

Thanks Gord for the tips. I'll see what I can do.

Edit: Oh lol that makes sense! I agree that is what I was going for mostly. I made that one in AE with particular trying to emulate the blood in 300. Like these http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=aDRH0Al811I

but yeah it still needs work to get more of the 300 feel.

Gordon? Please, Gord is fine. Gordon is reserved for my childhood friends and family.
When I hear 'Gordon...' I know I'm in big trouble for something, lol.
Carry on. :)

If your doing a CU of the wound that'll be fine but really check out the video I mentioned before for mid shots because it's shot much different. There's less detail and the blood moves much faster and is more stringy. Not much more I can add. But for a slo mo CU, what you have (post #13) would work fine.

Thanks Gord I actually just rented Boondock Saints today :). Will watch it tonight! Thanks again for the comments.

Having looked at the 300 blood effects again, I have the video, it does looks really amateur. I think what saved it was the rest of the scene, mood ect. but I would not try to emulate that effect as it was not well done at all (the blood effect itself). Just a heads up.
