nVIDIA Quadro FX4500 versus FX3500

Is there any big benefit in the FX4500 over the FX3500? I know the FX4500 has 512MB rather than the 256MB on the FX3500. But will that translate to a noticeable improvement in performance?
 
I have a Quadro FX3400 and have wondered if I should upgrade. I probably won't for some years still.
 
Yeah, from what I'm researching, Avid runs just as well on an FX3450 as on an FX4500.

I suppose there MUST be some benefit in using the FX4500 for After Effects though, right? I'm pretty sure AE does a lot of rendering using the GPU.
 
I don't think AE uses the GPU for anything except OpenGL previews, and half the time that sucks too. Unless they've changed it with CS4, the GPU does little with AE.

Hm. So why does the nVidia Quadro keep upgrading its specs (other than the obvious answer--to sell more cards). Just seems that there's gotta be some benefit to the faster cards with more RAM. But I'll do the test for myself and report back here next week with my results.
 
There are programs that take advantage of the Quadro cards. I think AutoCAD, some 3D programs, stuff like that. But AE--not that I'm aware of. Avid--yes, for some effects, but I don't know how much of a leap you'll see performance wise between a 3500 and the 4500. I have the 3450 and it's doing fine for me. I won't change cards until this one is obsolete or we get a new computer.
 
Okay. Installed the FX4500. Been playing for a few days. Gotta say it...faster renders in Avid. They just are. I haven't TIMED anything. No benchmarks. Just having watched that render bar a billion times, I know it's faster. Could be some of my plug-ins (Magic Bullet) use more GPU than CPU. And doesn't the new Avid 3.0 (I'm still 2.8) have a mechanism for choosing the right balance between CPU and GPU? Anyhow, After Effects works more fluidly as well. Was it worth an upgrade? Considering I sold the old card and bought used on eBay, I think it was worth it.
 
Go to the nVidia site and read up on CUDA. While AVID doesn't yet employ CUDA technology, apps like TMPGENC have implemented it in their latest release.

In short, CUDA uses GPU acceleration for image processing. AND, nVidia finally realized that computer screens are RGB0-255 in their latest driver implementation.

Now, if only AVID will update to this technology.
