35mm adapter and a 2.35:1 aspect ratio

After searching this site on the subject of anamorphic lens and 35mm adapters combined my question still remains this:

Can a 35mm adapter for the 'HVX200' be used with an anamorphic lens?

I am a few clicks away from buying a brevis 35 with flip module but I hesitate in doing this. I want to know is there a way to get all of the pixels the HVX200 pushes into a 2.35:1 aspect ratio (no cropping allowed). And get the depth of field control I need for cinematic quality in my feature?

I hope I'm not 'Stumping the Stars'.

Any cinematographers out there willing to suffer the task of dumbing this down?

You should use anamorphic cinematographic lenses with the adapter.

So, your saying just put an anamorphic lens on the rig. It was my understanding that an anamorphic lens takes the image at the last stage of the optics in a 35mm camera rig (@1.85:1) and then projects it to 35mm film for a squeezed image that is then unsqueezed by a reciprocal projector rig to view the image realistically (@2.35:1). There has got to be some way to work this out, but you are probably right that it would have to be done with a piece of glass and not electronic magic. Any cinematographers out there willing to suffer the task of dumbing this down?

what he means is that you would have to do it the same way they achieve anamorphic with film. You would need anamorphic cinema lenses instead of 35mm slr lenses on the front of the adapter, and then unsqueeze it in post. Easy in theory. I bet you could find a nice set of anamorphic LOMO's for a could hundred grand or less.

Good luck finding a place to rent these lenses at! San Diego might have a rental house with a set of these for rent. Don't expect them to come cheap!

I'd suggest cropping in post versus shooting in 2.35:1 They have great overlay mask images nowadays that you just add to final cut as the top layer and viola... you're in 2.35:1!

Exactly. But it is very problematic:

1. anamorphic cinematographic lenses have a H x W ratio calculated for the film frame and not for the CCD
2. focusing becomes very difficult: you have all the problems of focusing with adapters plus the problems of focusing with anamorphic lenses
3. anamorphic lenses are very expensive and heavy
4. only a few adapters can support them
5. you can hace vignetting issues because they are calculated for a smaller frame (18*24mm instead of 24*36mm)

It is better to shoot in 16:9 and then crop in post, exactly as George Lucas has done with HDcam shooting Star Wars

Yeah, I found some used equip after googling '35MM anamorphic adapter' and saw the pricing... yikes! $70k/used. Sounds like cropping is the way to go guys.
