I found an awesome deal on Matte Boxes!!! $189 BRANDNEW!

I edited my post... sorry... I'm glad you like the matte box... I think I'm going to try one out also.

If you could... I'd really like to see some pictures of the box mounted on your camera. I'm really interested in this box.

I just ordered it. Been looking for something like this for quite some time!

Thanks,

Kegan

Frank... so... do you know of anything about these? More commentary please? I have no idea how to take that post, but if you have some personal experience to share, that would be appreciated.

For the record:

They are all from the same indian ompany: http://www.thecinecity.com/

There are tonns of resellers out there - some even put their own logo (and an extra price tag) on it.

The indians have several Ebay accounts in different countrys with different prices
Sometime you can make a real deal by checking UK or German Ebay.

Quality: a mixed bag.

Metal parts are good machined but simple design.

Plastic is ...well - plastic.

Threads, bolts and nuts are horrible. Prepare to strip treads at first use,
prepare to retap or just replace them.

Everything could be build a bit mor beefyer - but if you handle it with some care it´s fine.

I got the"pro"mattebox from them, but since I have my (more than twice as big) Chrosziel I look at it more as a sunshade and don´t use it any more.

Hope that helps

Frank

do you guys know a inexpensive one that mounts to 15mm rods?

I hate to post this, but it's in the best interests of our DVXuser community, so here goes... I bought the same exact matte box that image-west sells for $189... for $108 SHIPPED... and I've seen several sell for UNDER $100 shipped.

If you want to get the exact same deal as I did... go to my favorite internet auction site... and search "matte box french flag" and you will be taken to less then a dozen listings... AND ONE LISTING in a "store"... that matte box is $140 OR BEST OFFER.

Since I've seen SEVERAL NOW that sold for about $80... I thought I'd put in a reasonable offer of $90... I did... and in less then 1 hour... they took the offer. Shipping is $18 from India... for a total cost of $108. The seller's name is DV-Shop23.

For the exact same matte box.

Pics, details, and full report once the matte box arrives.

Best Regards and Intentions,

Matt

Report back when you get it... and let us know the offer. I thought my offer was low, but reasonable... considering they've sold lots of them for $10 UNDER my offer...

I agree with this, and other threads... that a matte box is a pretty important visual element for clients to see... even if it's just a prop.

I bought this knowing that it's not going to be the best matte box... but NOBODY will think about the difference, except another shooter... no talent, or client, will think twice about it.

BTW... when you win one... don't forget to specify the ring size... for example... DVX = 72mm.

Well... just so everybody knows... it's the exact same product. That's where image-west is getting theirs also. It's the same thing. Not a version of... but the exact same product.

I would have been able to gage the real ship time... but I'm debating on one of their blimps... and the offer is in limbo... due to me trying to decide if I want to take their counter-offer... or if I want to simply decline and get a Rode blimp.

Once I tell them to ship... either way... I will report back on the full situation. Both of those stores have not less then 99%... but rather 99.6% for the store I used... and 99.2% for Cine City... which is the actual manufacturer, by the way. 99.6% is pretty high customer satisfaction... and the supposed ship time is under one week... I'll let you know how it goes after I decide what I want to do about the blimp.

Having orderd a lot of gear from Cinecity - it takes about 12 days to Germany (the steadycam took a bit longer).

Service is more responsive than most of the american and german shops I dealt with.
If someting is missing or broke they send it out in no time - I even got a full refound within several hours, cause the motor in the DOF adapter did´nt work (actually a wire was welded wrong - quick fix) no questions asked - they did not wanted it back (probably the shipping would be more expensive than material and labour over there).

I decided to pass on the blimp and asked them to ship my matte box as of yesterday. That was Friday the 10th of October. Let's see how long it takes this thing to get here... and what it looks like when it does. I will give my absolute honest opinions... and I'll probably be a harder judge of this thing then most people.

BUT... I should add that I've used a collapsable rubber hood on my DVX quite a few times... and for around $14 or so shipped... for something so flimsy and temporary... I can't believe you can get a way more functional tool... for only about $100.

This should be interesting. I don't expect to get this thing at any time NEXT week... probably the week after if I'm lucky... and even that would be considered fast shipping from India... since B&H often times can't get something to me in the same week I order it.

WOW! The matte-box ARRIVED TODAY! That is 6 days shipping INCLUDING 2 days of the weekend! Item shipped LAST FRIDAY... arrives today, Thursday.

Let me tell you guys... this is EXACTLY what the good doctor ordered! For the price it is a stupidly good bargain! If you can get one for what I paid I say run, don't walk, to get yourself one!

I fully agree that the appearance of your cam never hurts... and this thing looks really nice! I'm very surprised to find the quality of construction to be much better then I expected. The fit and finish are actually pretty good... and it's FEATHER LIGHT... so it's not like you'd need rails for support... it probably doesn't weigh much more then the stock DVX sunshade.

I'm extremely happy with this matte box for $108 shipped... in only 6 days via DHL.

No pics until I get caught up with work... maybe tomorrow. Don't forget this isn't a rotating stage matte box... it's mainly for looks... but the french flag is awesome and functional. I'm not experiencing any deficiency in hardware quality either... all the screws look right, feel good, and function well.

Overall I'd give this a 10 out of 10 experience. It's no wonder image-west is able to sell these for much more... I'd be fairly happy with this for more $$$ then I paid... as it is now... Wow! I couldn't be happier with my purchase. An outstanding bargain for certain.

Received mine on Monday (purchased from ImageWest) - just forgot to post. Had to pay $80 in duty charges, so fair warning to any Canadian buyers. Total came to around $300.00 CDN...wouldn't have minded to pay $108, but was most impressed with the build quality of my mattebox and the look. I have yet to actually use it on a shoot though.

My decision, as with Matt's was purely based on aesthetics and the want to impress a client. I'm sure I'll try using filters though, now that I have the option.

Offtopic... but you did got it working? And how are the results? Just wondering as I see so many expensive DOF adapters and this one...
