Manual Lens Conversion Photos?

Hey Guys,

I'm seriously thinking about possibly modifying my DVX100 Andromeda further....

Nikon Mount.

I know its nuts.

BUT, I have my hands on the actual camera service manual, complete with instructions on how to *properly* get access to the DVX100 lens, and its actually a completely encased lens assembly that IS removable from the camera.

Now I'm NOT stupid, I do my homework on these kinds of things, and I found posts by a guy who tried this years back with less success who posted pics, but I can't find them online anymore. Does anyone here have them? I'd love to see his pictures. My service manual actually has some color photos, and even exploded view diagrams on the entire camera, but I'd love to see his photos still.

Juan at Reel Stream said years ago that it would tough to put a lens in because of the chasis design, something about a hunk with "controls" in it needing to be moved somehow. I think this may be where the other guy made his mistake, it sounds like he might have damaged some important stuff, and from what I've learned, getting at the lens requires you to go past the board that has all of the cameras AD's etc... in it.

Well anyhow, any shots would be great!

Thanks!

That's an ambitious project -good luck!
Where did you get your hands on the service manual? I'd really love to get one myself

I do remember seeing them, but don't remember where. DVinfo, maybe?

I'll look around to see if I can find them...

And YES, you're crazy for attempting this ;)

LOL, I haven't officially decided to open the camera up yet, just poking around and boning up on confidence ;)

I sent an email to the service repair guy asking for any information he might have.

If anyone has a beat up old DVC180, it would make a good test bench for this kind of thing.

Ok I just did some homework on field of view implications of using a Nikon lens mount on the DVX100:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format

Scroll down, you'll see a big table that lists the various formats "crop factors"

WOW!

7.21!

That means a 50mm lens has a FOV more like a 360mm lens!

DANG!

18mm works out to 129mm.

OK, I guess this mod is somewhat useless, unless you can find some seriously wide angle primes, like 5mm, but thats basically fish eye. Though I wonder how bad it would look since your only using the very small middle portion of the lenses full projection. The tough part though... finding a good 5mm lens. So far I can only find 10-16mm Nikons, and even at that, I'm still gonna have very tight FOV.

Now this does open up some new ideas however. Perhaps I could replace the DVX lens with something better, to act as a superior, purpose dedicated relay lens.

I was going to do this on my own camera, until someone pointed out the same thing....
What ya got is a telephoto lens.
Getting 5mm lenses are not going to work either for the effect you're after IMO.
I gave up on this project. The only place I know someone used 35mm SLR lenses is on the RED camera. Actually it was better than cine lenses that cost a lot more :)

I think you can find it in some of the RED or scarlet forums.

Awhile back I saw where someone had mounted a Canon lens on a VX2000. I'll do some searching to see if I can find that again.
