How do you get 4 channels of audio out through the two rca audio outputs?

Hi all,

One of the things I do like about the 502 is the fact that I can record 4 channels of audio at the one time. This will be handy for me in press conference situations where the cam mic can be left on ch2, the radio mic receiver left in ch1 and two desk mics in channels 3 & 4. If, after the press conference concludes, I have to jump off the tripod and follow the talent walking off, I won't have to do anything but unplug ch3 and ch4 and run. Camera mic will still be active.

But what I want to know is this:

If I am to feed the vision to the office via SDI through a link that does not support embedded audio, I am going to have to use the two RCA connectors to get the audio out of the camera, into a mixer, and then into the feed point.

Now, if I have the four channels of audio recorded on the camera, how do I get those 4 channels out through the 2 rca sockets?

Do the 4 channels get mixed into a "left and right" channel configuration, for example channels 1 and 3 go out via output 1 and channels 2 and 4 go through output 2, using the "st" selection on the side of the camera?

Or, do two channels get ignored?

Seems weird that there are 4 tracks of audio but only 2 (physical) outputs you may have to use at some stage.

Cheers,

David

The RCA connector outputs audio signals recorded on Channels 1/2 or 3/4.
Output signals are selected with the MONITOR SELECT CH1/2 / CH3/4 selector switch.

So as far as I know, you can't simultaneously output all 4 channels.

Thanks Brad, I just did a test and it appears that, yes, you can only get 2 channels out of the camera via the rca sockets at anyone time. I guess this is ok, on further consideration, because on playback I could always switch to the cam mic output (ch2) after feeding channels 3 and 4 of the press conference.

So could someone please explain to me what the "st" setting is on the middle of the left Monitor Select switch?

Although I have never used it, it is suppose to allow you to select stereo mode from either inputs 1/2 or 3/4 and then routes the signal to the monitor out.

So you mean stereo as opposed to the two channels mixed together? The explanation in the manual doesn't clear it up.

That's correct. Otherwise the 2 channels are blended equally to both left and right monitor outs. When set to ST, the channels are separated with one sent to monitor left, and the other to monitor right.
