FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

Stevet: do you remember off hand what overcrank you expect from the Ultra II 15mbs cards without an error using the kensington and when it starts to fail?

I'm testing with two AFT's door closed, no problems at 35 so far, now testing 40.

I'm amazed you got that far with the AFT. Myself and others tested that expresscard adaptor and it fails even running HQ modes.

Here's what we did find. It seems to get worse with time as if these cards have a thermal problem that degrades performance over time. Mine worked for about 1/2HR, after that it failed even with HQ modes. I heard the same story from someone else.

Sup KxS peeps,

I did the firmware upgrade no problem. Thanks! EX-1 (KxS) was brought on set for a music video yesterday to do some BTS. No issues whatsoever. I'm still wow'd by the affordability of this combo.

On a side note about dumping SDHC, does it matter if I use the Kensington adapter to dump or the SD->usb adapter? I'd assume it would be the same speed regardless of connection because both options source from an SD card anyways.

Thanks fellas.

:Drogar-Dum(DBG): I've tested the i <dot>connect and transcend 16Gig. combo last night and found it quit impressive except for one thing. Good news: I can over-crank @720p / 24 up to 48fps without errors, the memory although is class 6 (x133) but runs much faster than that; compared to other class 6 SDHC chips, they write a file in 1/2 the time. The scandisks are 15Mbs and are good, too; I think the rating is x150 -- clear me up on these ratings! The Lexar 8gig Express card barely makes the grade for HQ and will error out on overcranking at 25fps after 15min of normal use. They maybe good for SP quality recordings, only. The IxT combo is fast and reliable, Bad news: they have trouble finding the chip when the camera is turned on, I find I have to reinsert several time the chip before the camera can find it. Please let me know if anyone has had this trouble with the Kinsington or AFT adaptor, thanks -- Carl Marxx

Paul has not reported back on the AFT.

I would NOT delare the AFT as a working solution for the EX.
Several including myself had these fail when using HQ modes.

Arik, yes, when it comes to dumping the SDHC cards it doesn't make any difference which reader you use, just use what is most convienient and best for you. For me, on my laptop, it has an integrated SD card reader so just for convienience I will use that. On my desktop I bought a Lexar Professional CF/SD USB card reader (about 1/10th the price of the Sony SxS reader, which thankfully I never did buy...)

Carl, if you read back through some of the other threads you'll find we initially started with the Lexar memory cards but quickly realised they are only good for SP and even then it isn't unusual to get a 'restore card' request if you do a lot of stop/start etc Some of us got a few and they have been relegated to emergency use now.

I don't think anyone has reported having the recognition problem with KxS but it wouldn't suprise me if it is reported once in a while. I have even had this happen with SxS once. It should never be a common issue though.

Paul TV,
I am very curious about your test... tell us more about the AFT and your experiences (nice to have the card adaptor door close)...

Also, which memory card are you testing with the AFT.

Thanks...

One thing for sure, the new SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s does NOT work at all in the AFT PROExpress-7 ExpressCard Reader. It has a media error when you insert the Extreme SDHC card.

Well, AFT's worked all day at S&Q 40 switching slots ( with Sandisk Ultra 15mbs cards ),
set up this morning and instant media error on one card - so there's still an error occuring at this data rate - testing my 2 KxS all day (at 40) today whilst I'm editing..

AFT's looking dud.

Paul

Hey Stevet,

Have you thought about some kind of adapter or adapter combination that would allow the use of Compact Flash Cards? There are some great Compact Flash Cards out there now!

Just done 5 hours of S&Q 38 with SxK - not a twitch - back to testing the AFT's at this level, and will further test the normal HQ modes on this combo -

the problem here is CF cards are actually slightly wider than an ExpressCard 34 card so a CF could never actually fit in a EC34 reader and would have to hang out like a wired dongle. I don't think that is anything anyone would want for the eurgonomics. I think someone did try one out but it didn't work with the combo they tried anyway.

:) I read the thread about the Lexar Express card, GuyB, and I was just conferming what was said. I tested the Lexar at SP speeds (25Mbs) and has no errors; therefore, it can only be assumed that these express cards can only be used for HDV projects, reliably. The Trandscend SDHC 16gb. chips are highly under rated in speed. The IxT combo exceedes any speed tests so far for HQ mode (S&Q 48), but I still have trouble with the camera finding it at start-up, though. True if you keep it on for the duration of the shoot, it is fine; but, short interviews, etc., when you want to save battery life, it can me a problem. I'm still wondering if any one else has had this problem continuiously. -- Carl

I am really striking out. Just tried a 16GB Sandisk Extreme 3 SDHC in a kensington reader and got an error message from my EX3 ' cannot format' / 'needs to be restored'. I got this same error message from an 8GB transcend card as well. I am wondering if there needs to be a firmware update to the Ex3 as well as the EX1. Is there one, and how do I locate my firmware current version? Any ideas?
thanks
Bill

3hats.
Are they the NEW Extreme III 30MB/s SDHC cards?

I believe, the early 16GB Extreme 20MB/s SDHC cards (w/ Kensington adaptor) were never confirmed with the EX1 or EX3.

The Sandisk is a new Extreme III 30MB/s / the Transcend is a 8GB class C
what am I doing wrong?
The Ex3 is new, purchased in the last 2 weeks

Check your firmware in the engineering menu - turn on cam, pressing menu, sel/set and cancel buttons all at once will reveal extended menu items including firware level.
