What Do We Need To Add A Marshall V-R70P-HDA to HPX170

After a frustrating day with focus issues, we want to add a Marshall V-R70P-HDA to our HPX170.

We have cam and Sachtler sticks and head.

Nothing else.

Do we need rails to achieve this?

No experience with on cam LCDs, and any assistance in detail would be appreciated.

thanks

You need something to mount it on with a 1/4" thread. You can use a separate stand, an articulating arm (don't need rails, as you can purchase a clamp that attaches to your tripod), or you can buy a hotshoe adapter with a 1/4" mount.

An articulating arm is the best bet in terms of flexibility but it can be expensive, while mounting right onto the camera via hotshoe is easiest and cheapest but least flexible (that's what I do). I would suggest mounting on the hotshoe and seeing if it works for you. You need this or something like it: http://www.filmtools.com/ninmounbracf.html

If you want to go the articulating arm / clamp route, there are a bunch of options. Don't use the Noga arms though - they are weak and the Marshall is heavy.

Thanks Will. I appreciate your response.

Which arm do you suggest, and which battery? Finally, where can I get a short component cable that will work with the Marshall and HPX170?

The Zacuto arm is supposed to be very good, though I have not used it myself. There are other custom options that may work too. I have a Carrion, not a Marshall, but the approximate weight and connection is the same.

I opted for a Panasonic battery plate since I have a bunch of those batteries already. While this may seem convenient, I have found the the added weight of the batteries (takes two to power the Carrion) makes using most articulating arms impossible, which is why I just use the hotshoe adapter or a stand. Ted Spencer has a Marshall, IIRC, and he uses the clamp that I mentioned, which seems to work well for him. You might want to send him a PM.

Not sure about a shorter component cable - maybe Spec-Comm?

David is difficult to make a good and fast focus on the hpx 170? I don't believe in the extra focus assist software, what I do believe is that this camera needs a decent LCD.
