FEATURE: DEUCE OF SPADES - How I made a period full feature film all by myself on ZERO budget

I felt a bit put off on the hotness (though true) remarks as well.

But, isn't she also staring?

If so, that makes the subject fair game as it's kinda known that if you are looking for a hot leading lady you generally get a hot leading lady.

Now, as far as her business acumen, negotiating and people skills, technical talent, artistic vision, and artistic prowess.....

HOLY SH!T!

This is simply incredible.

A++++++++++ and I hope to at least see this on the airwaves!

Faith doesn't seem to mind but how did her "hotness" enter a conversation about her film between fellow filmmakers? Sorry, but this is just a bit sexist. Faith is obviously a driven and talented filmmaker but her physical assets really have nothing to do with her accomplishments as a filmmaker.

Have any of you watched Mad Men? I guess Faith is our "Peggy", same predicament as that character. This thread proves that things really have not changed for women much, many of you are still thinking that Faith is doing a pretty good job, "for a women". Sorry, but as a cofounder of the LAFCPUG (Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group), for years we tried to encourage women filmmakers to particpate and we always had trouble getting them to participate. We didn't want the UG to become a "boys club", but it did somewhat. I think that our goals here should be the same, we would like to see and hear from more women filmmakers, not fewer. I know if my 14 year old daughter was reading this thread, she might now want to join in for fear of not being as "hot" as Faith. It's ridiculous. There are so many talented women working in our field but we rarely hear from them for the reasons of threads like this. Do you think Ellen Kuras is "hot" too?

Grow up boys, it's 2008.

Sorry to hijack, back to Faith the filmmaker...

Best,

Dan

The "hotness" issue is a tricky one, especially since Faith herself doesn't appear to mind. Characterizing someone as 'hot', by either gender to either gender is so commonplace now in mainstream culture as well as real life, that I'm not sure I'm ready to consider all instances of it outright cases of sexism. If people on this forum were to characterize me as such (however unlikely), I suspect I'd react with a smile much as Faith evidently has. One must have a sense of humor, I think. It's well known that political correctness taken to its extreme would almost certainly forbid humor since it invariably makes fun of someone. Heaven save us from that...

Regarding your daughter, God made us in all shapes and sizes. Some of us are hot, and some are (relatively) not. Just as some are more or less talented, smart, athletic, funny, popular or whatever. It's life. I think the far better way to view your (or anyone's) daughter's concerns is to teach her to respect and value herself for who she is. Most of us aren't particularly "hot", and still do just fine in life - better in very many cases than out hotter counterparts.

I have great respect for you Dan, but in my humble opinion, the line has not yet been crossed in this discussion. I think a scolding over it is quite unnecessary at this point, and whiffs a bit of PC in overdrive.

Hi Ted:

Just to be clear, I understand the spirit intended and that people were probably just having fun. You are correct, I would imagine if Faith had an issue with it, she probably would have said so.

I don't think it is morally wrong to tell someone that they are hot if you think that they are, I just felt that Faith was here to show off her work and accomplishments and that to bring "hotness" into the thread was unprofessional and definitely not solicited by her. The problem is, if telling women that they are hot becomes the accepted norm, the conversations will disintegrate from there, it will go much further, much faster. I've worked with women on film sets, adminstrative, office settings, have had them as bosses and subordinates when I was managing a twenty three million dollar a year business and the best policy is always to keep socializing, flirting and dating separate from work. Granted DVX user is not always about work, but other than the Cafe', I think most of us post and read here in kind of a capacity to learn, trade, exchange information about our work, right?

I posted because I have seen this effect happen in several user groups that I have been part of, lots of boards that I post on and I think it really does intimidate and scare off other women. Why would a woman want to post on DVX User or anywhere else if she feels that that in order to discuss anything about filmmaking, if she posts pictures of herself at shooting or editing, she may be judged on if the boys here think that she is hot or not?

We all know that 99.8% of posters here are guys and most of us are not subjected daily to evaluation of our looks or sexual desirability, but my point is, so why should Faith or any other women have to be subjected to it here? There are plenty of ways to flirt, pickup and arrange dates on the web (My Space, Facebook, millions of boards for singles and marrieds who want to cheat), I have no problem with it, but I do feel that women filmmakers who post here or on any other so-called professional board should not have to think about their sexuality unless they put it out there for comment.

As Faith posted, she doesn't feel that she looks particularly hot while she is working, she is tired and grimy like we all are when we are shooting so I am convinced that she didn't post all of these images in the hopes of soliciting comments about her appearance, she was just showing herself working, directing her film.

It just comes down to professionalism. There is absolutely nothing wrong with telling someone you think that they are hot. I just don't think that it is professional in a filmmaking forum, especially if the OP is not seeking compliments or date propositions. I personally visit this board several times a day because I learn so much, meet great people that I actually end up hiring and working with and there are so many great minds and knowledge here. But I don't come here to cruise for chicks, there are so many more appropriate places to do that on the Internet.

I can provide commentary from several professional women filmmakers that I personally work with (my producing partner is a woman for one) who would tell you the same thing. Not trying to be a hardass or grouch and I see nothing wrong with complimenting someone, but I feel that many female lurkers who might read these boards might find this intimidating to post here and join in on the conversation if they feel as if they will be "evaluated". It has no place in a professional environment.

BTW, I am the least politically correct person you will meet, I made this remark because I have seen this happen many times before with the same end result, DVX User will just be a boys club and "boys will be boys". Right? Nothing against you or the other posters, I just wanted to state my opinion, we can agree to disagree. I totally respect you and I have learned a great deal from your posts, you always have a valuable contribution to the boards.

Best,

Dan

Dan.

The internet and most especially this Forum is for sharing information and divergent opinions.

I for one, very much appreciate and respect you for sharing your opinions always and most especially when they are somewhat different from those that I have formed.

This is how we learn and gain a better understanding of the people and world around us.

Your points here are very well taken.

My Warmest Regards,

Estebe

My apologies, your probably right.
Its very impressive work from Faith and that should remain the focus here.

What an embarrassing thread...

Do you guys realize how sexist it is to make such a comment (as harmless as it may seem)? And then to go on and on and on about it, hijacking the thread, and analyzing it to death?

Can you imagine a woman poster on here making such a comment about a guy? I can't.

I know some of you guys must be pretty young, so do yourselves a favor when dealing with professional women - leave gender out of it (even on an internet forum.)

Damn Chris!

You are even hotter when you are a little steamy!

Grrrr.....

#1: I might well be older than you are.
#2: I have the utmost respect for women.
#3: Women call men 'hot' all the time. Ever watch TV or read a magazine?
#4: You left out the "in my humble opinion" part of your comments above.
#5. Lighten up.

Peace, brother

Love the period, the cars, the dedication, the ingenuity, and the attitude. Seeing what you're accomplishing is a great inspiration!

1) OK...
2) OK...
3) Yep. But I was referring to users of this forum, not the whole of society and pop culture.
4) No, I didn't leave that out.
5) Should I take up sailing?

Peace on you.

And let me add that I also find Faith's project and her dedication inspiring. I recently shot and produced a very low budget feature and pretty much single-handedly was responsible for running 2 cameras with adapters, and sound recording.

It's a real mother shooting a feature with a tiny crew. I look forward to the finished film.

I can say that I definitely couldn't have done it, that's why I am not a narrative filmmaker. Most of the ones that I work with (Adam Cultraro, Curtis Hanson, Ed Zwick and a few others) are 110% more driven than mere mortals and will complete their project whatever it takes.

But it's not just perserverance and stubbornness, it's also sheer talent, which based upon her stills and trailer, Faith has in Spades, pun intended. I can't wait to see her film, just seeing what she has already accomplished is a real inspiration to me.

Faith

A little bird whispered in my ear that I might enjoy checking out your project and the debate of hotness that rages on.

1st, let me say your leading man is 'hot'. (there guys i said it....cause he is smoking hot. great casting choice Faith!

2nd, Faith is hot too and if that is all you care about then you are being sexist but if you think her work rocks and you think she is hot, in my own humble opinion you are making mental note that she is a double threat (i dare say if she does most of this work on her own, male or female she is a 6-8 time threat because talent seems to ooze out of every pore she has)

3rd, I love how you cheated your angles to hide the dated things that would throw off the time setting. i watched the trailers and actually think the odd angles work to your favor more than once!

4th...I am moved that so many guys seem to be worried about the 'hot' comment because it shows that things have changed a lot. in the past those things would just fly by and no one would notice if it did or did not harm the person it was said about.

the fact so many of you care to debate it seems very cool to me.

I can't speak for Faith on this one...not really. But for me...want me to be one of the boys then feel free to talk about the amazing 'ta-tas' on the girl down the street, not about mine. don't pat me on the butt unless we are playing football and i made a killer play. in other words, want me to be one of the guys then honestly treat me like one of the guys.

being called hot is a compliment of sorts but if it came after you noted all Faiths talent (which on this thread, it did seem to follow after) it is a side bar and not the main topic.

by the way...i have seen plenty of men on crew from producer to director on down who i thought was hot and i said so. did not get me any....but hey...i can still appreciate hot when i see it! heck...i think Faith is hot and find it very cool that such a woman who might have just banked on her looks has done far more than most men would even try. it makes her hotter...cause talent and brains are sexier than bodies by far!

ok..that is my ramble on it and Faith...I really look forward to seeing what you do with this project. i love period work too and just wish i lived on your coast in hopes you would cast me one day. your work is superb! i would even work crew just to get in your good graces because i think you have an amazing future in film ahead of you!

Hi Michele:

Thanks for your POV. I was hoping that other women would post here and comment on this because I am a guy, what do I know about how women will take being called hot? To hear it from you is very enlightening.

Over the years, I have worked with several women who were definitely "one of the guys" and we were good friends. One of them got me a stripper (at work, no less) for my birthday, which I had no problem with but my wife did ;-) but that's a whole other story.

The politics of sexual attitudes and working together are a minefield today so it is interesting to hear what your viewpoint is on it.

Good luck with your project.

Dan

The Golden Rule is to treat others as you would want to be treated.

The Platinum Rule is to treat others as THEY wish to be treated. :-)

Faith,

How did you get all the cars together?

What is your total budget?

How hard was it to get all of your locations?

Are the cars fun? Are there owners on set too?
